I pace in front of the door. I know that I can't withhold the truth from Willow for much longer. But I was hoping she would be older than six, I feel she is still to young. Peeta is on his way home, we agreed to talk to our daughter together. I hear the sound of a key turning in a lock. Peeta comes through our door. He puts his arms around me.
"Stop pacing Katniss. It's going to be okay." He whispers. I nod, but he senses my uncertainty. "Hey, if we can survive two hunger games one of them having double the players we can talk to our daughter." Peeta soothes me. I'm about to respond but the door opens and nearly misses Peeta and I.
"Hi mommy! Hi daddy! Were is Rye?" Says Willow striding through the door.
"He's asleep upstairs." I say to her. "We want to talk to you."
"Am I in trouble?" Willow asks, frowning.
"No honey." Says Peeta picking her up. He caries her to the couch and sets her down.
"We're going to tell you a story, and it's going to be scary." I say kneeling down on the floor by Willow. She claps her hands excitedly.
"Oh yay." She says. I look at Peeta and then we launch into the story. I tell my daughter of when I met Gale and when I met Peeta.
"Daddy gave you bread and then you fell in love forever?" Willow had asked when I told her the story. I had nodded solemnly. I told her little of her aunt Primrose because I could barely bring myself to say her name. Then I tell her of the day my name was chosen. I skip over most of the games but I tell her of my stunning outfits. Willows eyes widen with every word. She claps excitedly at my berry stunt and also when I describe some of my wedding dresses. She gasps when I tell her of the quarter quill. I tell her how we found out that the arena was a clock but I only tell her some of its hours. Then we get to the rebellion.
"You were a soldier? Cool! Daddy too?" She asks. I look at Peeta and he nods.
"No daddy wasn't a soldier. The capital took him." I say softly.
"Oh no!" Willow exclaims. "How did you get him back?"
"We rescued him but his memory was funky so we came up with a game to play with him. We called it 'True or not True'. Daddy would say something and we would tell him if it was true or not." I tell her catching Peeta's eye and smile at him. I skip around the blood and the people dying but finish the story and look at Willow.
"Thank you." She says. I'm confused.
"For what?" Peeta asks.
"For telling me the truth." Willow says thoughtfully.
"Of course." Says Peeta.
"I'm going to bed." Willow says and walks off. I look at Peeta.
"That was hard." I say. He nods.
"But she needed to know the truth." He says. I nod.
My mind wanders to when we'll have to tell her the whole truth. And when we'll have to tell Rye. I sigh. It's just like they say, the truth is a slippery thing.
