Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, Earthquakes in Mexico, 7.1, 8.2, the floods in South Asia, the imminent war.
What is happening with the world? Am I becoming extra sensitive or has really a sadness around us? A friend of mine said "Have you noticed how many 'named' people died this year?" Yes, I noticed, but I wasn't so shocked about most of them. Most were with a certain age and, unfortunately or not, we are here on Earth for a brief period of time. However, the suicides, yes, those affected me. Another proof of our sadness.
Chapecoense tragedy, Charlottsville hatred.
My country was in morning with the first. Even the sky cried with us that day. We all still remember. Today though, we see that many took advantage of those tears, and few still cry for those who are lost.
I cried with the second. And at the same time I was thinking "Do you see? We are not the only one. This happens everywhere!"
Were I trying to justify violence?
I'm ashamed.
We are in a world that tries to justify every action. That holds in someone pain to hide their own grief. We give importance to what we think it's most important. The floods in South Asia? They are also know as "The Ignored Disaster". More than a thousand people died, millions lost their houses, the life they built. But how many of us heard about them?
We blame each other before we blame ourselves. We blame our country, our government, our parents, our partners... We focus in take the heavy weights from our shoulders blaming others, finding comfort in what is easy and safe. We don't face our fears or our sadness. We choose what is important in matter of the majority considers important. We are slaves of our own behavior.
Then, we go to bed and cry.
Will we really be able to blame ourselves — and ourselves only? Will we be able to face our own mistakes? There is nothing or anyone less or more important in the world that is not worth our attention, our empathy, our care. We are all equals, we only speak different languages, we live in different places and we have different colors and physiognomy. All this difference is accepted when we travel and use their homes, eat their food and dirty their streets and nature, but why is it not accepted to embrace each other as equals? To love, help and see?
Maybe we cannot save the world anymore. But there is still time to save ourselves.
