"is everything okay?" ethan sits up in bed, rubbing his tired eyes. he reads the digital clock that's placed on the bedside table, it reads 2:00am.
"it all hurts." sydney cries, her voice becoming muffled through the phone.
"what hurts?" he asks softly, getting ready to put on a shirt and run out the door if need be. he knew that his girlfriend has been through stuff in her life, with her parents' divorce, her twin sister dying at only six years old. they had been everything to each other. ethan couldn't imagine losing grayson.
"so much."
"i'll be over in a few minutes."
on the way to sydney's house, ethan's head was full of thoughts. thoughts about what could be going through her mind, and how he's going to approach her once he gets there. in the driveway, ethan takes a deep breath before cutting the engine of his rental car, getting out. his shoes make the gravel underneath his feet move with every step, and when he gets to the door, sydney's mother, vanessa, opens it before he has a chance to knock.
"hey, uhhh, is sydney-"
"why are you here at this hour?" she questions him, and it looked as though there was a knife on the counter, out and ready in case ethan happened to be a robber or murderer.
"is syd here?"
"well, of course, but she's upstairs sleeping." the woman sort of snorts, crossing her arms.
"can i please just go up there?"
"i see no reason as-" with no regret, he steps passed her and starts going up the stairs toward sydney's bedroom. he sees a faint light underneath the door.
"princess." his voice is deep and raspy and he clears his throat, opening the door slowly. he steps in the room, the light coming from her bathroom. he walks quietly to it, standing in the doorway to see his girlfriend a crying mess on the cold floor.
without word, ethan crouches so his eyes meet hers. sydney's are red and wet, some mascara running down her face.
"ethan you need to ge-" vanessa steps in, and when her gaze lands on the two teenagers, her expression softens.
"she gets this way." vanessa tells ethan softly, closing the bathroom door. she knows exactly what her daughter needs.
