"one last kiss before you go." sydney insists, pulling him by his jacket and toward her. his lips land on hers, neither of them wanting to leave this moment.
"baby, i gotta go." ethan wraps his arms around her and she puts her head on his chest, her ear against his heartbeat that she loves to listen to.
"no you don't." she mutters like a little kid.
"i love you princess."
ethan says this just before giving her a wink and walking off toward his gate. after he hands a lady his ticket, he disappears into the hallway. sadness suddenly fills sydney, and it feels as if a big part of her just disappeared.
she walks back to her car, nearly dragging her feet. all of a sudden, her phone vibrates in her pocket.
ethan: text you soon. i love you
tears filled her eyes. she hated that he had to leave. they're relationship was realistically long distance.
sydney got home and the house was dark and quiet. she slipped off her shoes by the door and tiptoed up to her room, shutting the door. she plopped on her bed and covered herself with all of her blankets, opening her phone. she clicked on the photo album that she made, pictures of her and ethan collected in it. her favorite was when he caught her off guard and kissed her on the cheek, and she made a surprised face just as the picture was taken.
she fell asleep, thinking of him.
'flight number 342 crash landed just on the coast of california early this morning at approximately 5:43 am.'
her heart dropped as she heard an announcer say this from the tv in the kitchen. sydney ran downstairs as fast as she could, and there on the news was the airplane that her boyfriend got in last night. it had crash landed.
vanessa looked to her daughter, sympathy filling her expression. the man kept talking, but she tuned it out. when they made eye contact, sydney began to cry.
sob.
wail.
when she glanced at the television, it was pronounced that there were survivors, which gave her a sliver of hope. right away, she went to call ethan's brother, grayson.
"hello?" he answers, his voice cracking.
"d-did you see the news, gray?"
"yeah. yeah, i did."
