"Do we really have to do this?"

"Yes! We really have to do this."

"But what if I meet him and completely screw up my chances?"

"Y/n, you won't screw it up."

Getting up from my bed we were sitting on, I started to gather some of the loose clothing on the floor.

"But Jaeden, I just don't know. From what you say it doesn't seem like Finn and I are compatible."

He started towards me, and grabbed the clothing out of my hands, tossing them into the hamper. He then placed his arms upon my shoulders, and looked me in the eye.

"No matter what happens, it's worth a shot, okay?"

In that moment, I could almost hear a pang of sadness in his voice. But, brushing it off, I brought him into a hug.

"Thank you, Jae."

Speaking into the crook of his neck, he rubbed my back soothingly.

"Of course."

I've known Jaeden since, well, forever. Our parents had been friends prior to our existence, and when we were born they practically forced us to hang out. Not that we didn't like it, but sometimes your best friend can annoy the shit out of you.

"Jaeden! Shut up I'm trying to do homework!"
I shouted to him sitting on the edge of my bed, listening to music through the speakers.
He looked up and grunted.
"Homework can wait. Let's watch a movie."
He threw my books on the floor, and wrapped my arm around him.
"Fine."

We've always been like an old married couple. Arguing constantly, but always still loving each other at the end of the day. There have been times where people mistook us for a couple, because were so close.

"And for your boyfriend, Miss?"
The polite barista asked me.
"Oh no, we're not dating."
She looked down at our hands, as we both just noticed they were connected. Jaeden and I both shook away from it, resuming our order.
"He'll have a black coffee."

But other than the fact that Jaeden and I always went at it, we were always there for each other.
I was there for his first heartbreak, and he was there for mine.
I was his first kiss.
And he was mine.

"H-he just cheated on me. I walked in on him and another girl."
His bloodshot eyes mirrored mine exactly, the dry tears on his face hurting me even more.
"She just dumped me. Over text like a coward."
Before I knew it, I had grabbed the back of his neck and my lips were on his, he kissed back.

But after that day, we never spoke of it again. It was like a distant memory, forgotten but still there. And now that Jaeden was trying to set me up with his friend, that oh-so-distant memory was coming back.

-

With the outfit that Jaeden helped me pick out, before I knew it I was sitting in a local cafe waiting for Finn.
Looking down at my phone, I was brought out of my daze by the door ringing.
A tall, lanky boy with a gorgeous head of dark curls came waltzing in. We locked eyes, and he started to approach me.

"Are you y/n?"

"Sure am, you must be Finn, I take it?"

He let out a breathy laugh, and flashed a heart melting smile.

"That would be me."

-

"Thank you, Finn. I had a great time."

As time winded down, and we'd both taken back 3 cups of coffee, it was time for us to leave. We talked a lot, and frankly; he was absolutely gorgeous. His sense of humour laced with the light auburn freckles that framed his face, he was practically the perfect guy. But he just wasn't the one for me. We'd exchanged numbers, and decided on being really good friends instead of something romantic.

"As did I. We should do this again. Call me."

With that he gave me a swift kiss on the cheek, and was out the door. I followed suit, heading back to my house where Jaeden was waiting; most likely eating my food and using the internet.

-

"Honey, I'm home!"

Almost an instant later, Jaeden was tumbling down the staircase with excitement.

"How'd it go?!"

"We're just friends, Jaeden. He's really nice though."

I could've sworn I saw his eyes light up when I said 'friends'. But it couldn't be anything, right?
He nodded, and then there was a block of silence.

"Wanna go watch some tv and eat some junk food?"

I smiled at him.

"You know me so well."

-

Sitting under the covers of the bed, Jaeden and I currently wore our matching best friend pyjamas, while watching the new season of Fuller House. I rested my head and torso on his chest, with one leg lazily slung over his. His arm was wrapped around my waist, while his opposing hand played with my hair. It felt right to be there like that with him. His warmth against mine, our hearts beating in sync.

"Hey, y/n?"

"Yeah, Jaeden?"

"Remember when we kissed that day?"

I blushed, but luckily he couldn't see my cheeks burning up.

"Yeah, I do actually."

He started to sit up, and I did too. I crossed my legs and waited for what he was going to say.

"Well, since you made that move all those years ago, I do believe I should repay you somehow."

His hand traveled to my neck, rubbing his thumb against it gently.
The space between us slowly melted away, and it all came back to me.
The first time his soft lips met mine, the way his hands travelled to my waist pulling me closer than possible.
Separating, the cold air hit my lips, causing me to tuck my head into his shoulder.
His arms still tightly wrapped around me, he started to speak,

"What are we?"

"We are, whatever you want us to be."

a/n oh wow holy crap she updated let's get a round of applause for ya girl
