Alice's POV:
"EVERYBODY UP! IT'S TIME FOR CHORES!" Mrs. Williams yelled. I looked at the alarm clock next to my bed: 4:30am, right on time. Today was like any other day at Mrs. Williams' orphanage. My life is like something out of Annie! I wake up early, do chores until it's time to get on the bus. I hate the bus! I always get motion sick on it, everyday without fail. I get to school and am made fun of because of my hair and this tattoo on my thigh. I guess my parents gave it to me before I was left at Mrs. Williams'. The tattoo looked like a burgundy-coloured bird. I've never seen anything with the same emblem before. After school, we go home and clean again. I have about 20 minutes before bed to talk to my best friend (and only friend) Claire, then I go to bed. It's exactly the same everyday. Three hours had passed and I started walking to my bus stop with Claire.
"Hey Claire! What'd you do for chores this morning?" I asked her as we walked down the sidewalk.
"Oh, I had bathroom and bedroom." She answered in an annoyed tone.
"Man that sucks, I had to--" Claire cut me off.
"--Shhhhhhh!! We're getting close to the bus stop!" She whispered through the side of her mouth.
"Oh," I signed as I put some distance between us. Claire had a reputation at St. Joseph's Highschool. She was the it girl, she couldn't be seen with me around her school friends because I was uncool. So, everyday, we would have to stop talking before anyone she knew saw us together. I walked the rest of the way to the bus stop alone. As we approached the spot where we would get picked up, Claire and her friends squealed in excitement about something.
"Look guys! It's pinky!" One of the girls pointed at me. They always made fun of my hair because it's naturally pink. The doctors have no idea how I got naturally pink hair. Because we don't know who my parents are, we can't find out.
"Yeah, she's such a dork!" Claire yelled right along with them. I looked down and tried to ignore it. It happens like this everyday. The bus pulled up and I started to dread what was about to come. I walked on the bus and sat down right at the front because all the people sat in the back of the bus and I wasn't allowed to join them. The bus started to move and I instantly started to feel sick.
"Uhhh!" I groaned, trying to hold in the vomit that was on the verge of being on the floor.
"Awe! Pinky's sick!" The kids yelled making fake crying motions. Once the bus pulled up to the school I was relieved! I had to wait until everyone was off the bus before going because if I tried to go before then, someone would push me back in my seat. After I finally made it out of the bus I was instantly hit with insults left and right. I ran to my hideout where I can get away from all the bullying, the bathroom. I went to the furthest stall from the door and sat on the floor in the corner and cried, like every other day.
The bell rang and the remainder of my spirits drifted away because it was time for classes. Classes were the worst part of the day, they were worse then all the chores I have to do. I got things chucked at me an stuff spilled in my hair. I knew I was cursed with this hair, once I tried to dye it brown but Mrs Williams found me and threw me in the basement for six days. There was absolutely NO dying hair at Mrs Williams orphanage! She made me cut off all of the hair I had dyed. That's how I ended up with a pixie cut a few years ago, it's grown back now.
I was sitting in class when I saw two people I had never seen before. It was a blonde woman in her forties and a pink haired man. This was weird because I had never seen a pink haired man before. Somehow these people felt oddly fimiliaer...like I was compelled to them. They looked into my classroom and looked at me, the woman turned away. Was she crying? Both of the people were gone when class had ended. After that everything was normal we had gone home and I was doing my afternoon chores.
"Alice Doe! Please come down to the office!" I heard over the rusty old speaker that Mrs Williams hardly used. She said "Alice Doe" Alice because that was the name that was on my basket and Doe because they don't know what my last name was. You see, one night when I was just a few months old I was left in a basket on Mrs Williams's door step. All that I had with me at the time was a blanket and a note that said 'Alice' and that was it.
I dropped what I was doing and headed down to Mrs Williams's office to see what she wanted. I walked in to see the two adults that were at my school.
"H-hello, Alice." The woman managed to spit out.
"These people are from the New York Times!" Mrs Williams squealed, "they're here to interview you about your crazy hair!" She added excitedly. I rolled my eyes. Lots of newspapers had wanted to interview me but they always wrote stuff like 'freak' or 'weirdo,' I don't like interviewers.
"Do I have to?" I pleaded but Mrs Williams nodded.
"Yes you do! Now go!" She scolded, Mrs Williams loved to have me be interviewed because it was more publicity for the orphanage. I followed the two people outside where they sat me down on a rock.
"Okay, what we're about to tell you is going to sound crazy." The coral haired man explained. This was odd because no other reporter had said anything like that.
"Huh?" I said confused.
"You have to believe us, okay!?" The woman added.
"O-okay." I agreed unsurely.
"We are your parents."
