Lucy comes in with a silver tray with a note in it. I take the note and sit on my bed. "Thank you, Lucy." I say as I open the letter. she curtsies and walks out of the room.America,
meet me upstairs in 10
minutes
- MaxonI put my shoes on and scurry out as fast as I can.
He's leaning heavily in the railing waiting for me.
Something is wrong.
"Maxon what's wrong?" I ask, but I already knew the answer.
He shakes his head and opens the door to his room.
I've only been in his room once before.
It's blue and has a giant bed in the middle. His dresser is full of cameras and pictures. I knew that he liked photography.. but he was very good at it, too.
He sits down and I know to grab the first aid kit from under his bed.
He winces as I put the disinfectant on the new open wounds on his back.
"What was it for?" I asked in a soft tone, not wanting to pry.
"I don't know.. it's as if every moment I spend with you makes him angry. He didn't know that you had seen the princess suit before and it's like he doesn't want you to get used to it.." he trailed off, his mind somewhere else.
"He can't stop me from loving you, America."
I stop dead in my tracks. "You... you love me?" I ask.
I knew that we hadn't talked in a while and this was the only time in weeks he had gotten to spend time together. This would not be my ideal date, but I just liked spending time with him. He was with Kriss a lot and I didn't know if he still wanted me. It was enough to break my heart.
"Of course. Did you ever think otherwise?"
He looked at me with an expression that made me sure of what I wanted to do.
"It's just that.. you've been spending a lot of time with Kriss... and I thought you were going to choose her."
I tried to choke back the tears and went back to repairing the wounds.
"You are the one I want America. I just... I just need to know that you will have my back. I want to know that if I need anything then you will be there," Maxon said sorrowfully.
I wrapped the bandage around his back as I thought of what to say.
"I love you too, Maxon." I said when I finally knew that my voice wouldn't waver as I said it.
"You can trust me because I know I can trust you."
Now it was Maxon's turn to shed a tear.
He kissed my forehead, and then my lips. I kissed him back.
I remembered that this is why I stayed.
Not for the money.
Not for the food.
But for Maxon.
