(New) Friends and Guardians

"Oh no! Now they're going to make me feel worse by reminding me of their death", Karen thought as she parked her car at the school's parking lot.

Karen heaved a sigh as she braced herself before getting down from the car.

Karen immediately rushed into the school from the parking lot to avoid condolences.

As she stepped into the school, all eyes were on her.

Before she could hear all their words of sympathy, her best friend, Bella, stepped in, saying,

"You all should save your condolences as Karen understands you mean good. She would not want to be constantly reminded of the death of her parents. It hurt her a lot and she would like to get over it. So I plead with all of you, if you will, not for me but for Karen, avoid words that you know will hurt her. Thank you".

As Bella said all these words with bravery, Karen just stood there speechless.

The crowd agreed and the bell was rung for classes.

Before they went into their class, Karen muttered a little "Thank you" with a hug.

Bella replied, "Anytime".

Time seemed to pass by for Karen as she couldn't concentrate in class.

The bell was rung for lunch.

As Karen was about to step out,a voice stopped her.

"Karen, would you excuse me for a minute? I would like to have a talk with you", the government teacher, Mrs. Benson said.

Karen obviously knew it was about her not concentrating in class.

"OK ma'am", Karen replied, having no other choice.

"Karen, you probably know why I'm calling you here", Mrs. Benson said.

"Yes ma'am", Karen said.

"I won't say much or pressure you. I just have to advise you as one of your numerous guardians. I know it is a lot to deal with. You would think I don't understand but I do. I want you to focus on your studies more as I know it always affects a person in all their state of mind".

Mrs. Benson continued, "Your parents are watching over you and want you to be happy. Everything's probably for the best. God's time is the best. So keep on working harder because you're a very gifted child with good intelligence and your parents will be proud of you. Alright now you may go for your break, that's all I have to say".

"Thank you Mrs. Benson I will certainly take heed to your advice", Karen said.

Karen met Bella waiting for her in the hallway.

"Everything alright?" Bella asked.

"Yeah", Karen said.

"Alright if anyone is troubling you let me know", Bella said.

Karen replies with a laugh, "Sure".

After lunch, Karen decided she will spend most of her free time in the library catching up on some work.

She picked up a Languages book and sat beside an unfamiliar face.

Few minutes later, the boy starts a conversation with her.

"Excuse me please are you new here", the boy asks.

"No I'm not", Karen replies.

"Well I am. My name is Jared and you?".

"Karen", she replies.

"Oh you're the one I've been hearing of. I shouldn't give condolences but I'm sorry and I hope you get over it", the boy said.

"OK thanks".

They talk a lot more and they exchange contacts.

The bell is rung for another period.

Karen and Jared wave both leaving for their different classes.

Coincidentally, they're having the same class together, which is Laboratory class.

It is strange how Bella and Karen have few classes together but are best friends.

The bell is rung then the teacher, Mr. White, pairs them up for a Science project.

Karen is paired with Jared, as being the genius in class to help the new kid.

Karen and Jared talk a little about the project before heading home.

Karen spots Bella and Bella receives a ride from Karen.

They chatter about their various experiences (including Jared and Troy, the new boy at Bella's class).

Then Bella is dropped off at her house as they both wave at each other.

Karen then leaves for home arriving shortly after.

"How was school? Hope no problem?", Nanny Mel asks ash she gives Karen a warm hug.

"School was fine and no problem", Karen replies.

"Okay my dear, if you say so. Your food is in the kitchen and I made your favorite dish".

"Awwn, thanks Nanny Mel that's why I love you".

"I love you too dear. Now go and have your bath and change", Nanny Mel says.

"Ok", Karen replies.
