CarmenDistant thumps. They sounded like heartbeats. Slow, steady heartbeats. Are those mine?
She felt as if her body was floating in thin air. She was so light, she thought, which was weird because she always felt heavy in her skin. What's wrong with me?
She wanted to open her eyes, to see where exactly she was and what was wrong, but her eyes were heavy and stuck together, refusing to open.
Distressed, she tried moving, but found that something pricked her arm when she did so. Forcing her eyes open so that a little crack was there, her vision blurred and light blinded her. She shut them tight, took a deep, laboured breath, and tried again.
A hospital room?
Carmen began panicking a little, trying to understand what exactly she was doing in a hospital room. The slow, steady beats she heard earlier picked up their pace a little, thumping faster and louder.
Something shifted out of the corner of her half-open eyes, groaning because of the disturbance of the fast beating of the machine.
Incoherent mumbling came from the . . . person?
Carmen looked around the room, managing to open her eyes fully. It was white. And filled with machines. And, recognising the person after a moment, her mum.
She tried to think a bit harder about why she was currently laying in a hospital bed, paining slightly in different places, but the more she thought, the more her head hurt.
"Carmen? Honey, look at me." Carmen turned her head slowly, ignoring the prickling in her stiff neck. Her mum got up, looking tired and worn with worry, laying a shaking hand on Carmen's cheek. Something wet dripped on her, and Carmen realised her mum was crying.
When she tried to speak, her throat hurt and her voice scratched, so she settled with just looking at her mum who was trying to control herself.
"Oh, Carmen. We were all so worried about you," Carmen heard her mum say in between heart wrenching sobs. "I should call the doctor," her mum said as if just realising it. She removed her hand and pressed a button, then returned to her seat and held Carmen's hand.
Her eyes got heavy again, and Carmen slipped back into a slumber with her mum's soothing hand stroking her hair.
