Allison
CarmenShe couldn't get into the car. Her foot refused to step in.
"I'm just — I'll walk."
Mum's eyes focused on the patch on Carmen's head. "But, Carmen, your head —"
"I'm gonna walk, mum," she said firmly.
Mum sighed, looking at Carmen with sad eyes. She got out of the car and opened the garage, walking out with Carmen.
"Thanks," Carmen whispered. Mum just ran a hand over her cheek in reply, giving her a soft smile.
"Any idea what you're buying for Allison? I still don't understand why you're buying something for her, though, shouldn't it be the other way around?"
Carmen looked at the way the trees swayed in the wind, the leaves rustling gently. She could feel the wind raking fingers in her hair and it was by far the best she felt since she left the hospital.
"There doesn't need to be an excuse to buy a gift for someone. Besides, I feel like Allison really needs something to show her that someone cares for her right now."
"What?"
Carmen looked at the confusion on her mum's face. She could almost hear the thoughts running through her mind. What does Allison need love and care for? But mum didn't read Allison's messages, Carmen thought with her heart squeezing, if she had, she'd be panicking to get to Allison just like I am right now.
"Allison's a fragile person, mum . . ."
They hustled through the people and walked into the shop Carmen had in mind.
"Yes, I know, darling, but if anyone needs care right now, it's you."
"I'm fine, mum."
"But you're still recovering."
"But I'm fine for the most part," Carmen argued.
Mum sighed, but said no more.
