Life is usually pretty boring here. I'm used to a mundane life, getting up early most days, going to school most days, and all of that nonsense. Today's not the same as most days. Well, not for me at least. It is for the monsters though.

Last month marked 800 years since monsters were trapped beneath the surface. We've all learned stories about them. They were normally told as fairy tales when we're young, about how we humans and monsters lived together in harmony. About how we used to use their magic to pick fruits from the tallest trees and things like that.

In history, we learned about how all that changed. We learned that the monsters betrayed humans, and so humans had no choice but to trap them underground.

Did they deserve it? No idea. One thing I do know is that if they did, they've had a bloody long time to rethink their actions. I think it's pretty damn exciting to see the creatures I've grown up hearing about.

I've decided to get to school early today, that is if my friends will be ready when I get to their houses. I've got my favourite lipstick on that I got for Christmas off my auntie, seeing as it's a special occasion, and I've put it in my bag for after lunch when it wears off.

If the traffic is right and my legs are working properly, I can get to Amy's in less than 10 minutes. Though, I don't like to rush as most of the trip is uphill. The town has a slow gradient leading towards Mount Ebott, and the school is just at the foot of the mountain. On a good day, it would take about 25 minutes to walk to school. Jenna usually takes her time getting ready, but if something's going on in school she'll be waiting outside the door when we get to her house.

After morning registration our form is called for a whole school assembly. I enter the main hall and sit in a row of lazily placed chairs next to my friends.

I notice that a couple of teachers circle the rows of seats hushing their occupants, while the others stand along the doors of the hall, murmuring quietly to one another. The room falls silent as the head of the school takes his place at the centre stage.

"I'm sure you are all aware of what's been in the news lately, it has been quite hard to avoid." He begins. "It has come to my understanding that many of the monsters will be coming to this local area, among the other villages nearby. As for this school, there will be no monsters allowed on the premises until more advanced agreements have been made. I would advise for your own wellbeing that you stay away from any and all monsters you encounter. More will be discussed on the matter next week when we have more information."

I stop listening as he continued to talk about the sports reports of the previous week.

As usual, once the head dismisses us, all students rise from their seats and flood to the exits of the main hall, except for randomly elected two rows the deputy head has held back to in an attempt to reduce the stampede.

We have English first period, and our teacher likes to get us to debate about relevant topics every couple of lessons. All of the students in our class are happy to showcase their viewpoints, so we spent the whole hour discussing the monsters.

"I don't really think it matters what they did in the past, we've probably done worse to our own race than they did to us anyway."

"Who's to say they won't do it again? History repeats itself, and maybe this time they'll be stronger than us."

"Dude, we have nuclear weapons. We can take them out in the blink of an eye."

"What if they're nuclear weapon proof?"

"I don't think anything's nuclear weapon proof."

"Then explain cockroaches... and Twinkies."

"That's a myth."

"I don't think I wanna be here when they drop a bomb on them though."

"Ugh, I do."

The class laughs. The teacher interrupts us.

"Alright, I hope you got that out of your system, you can pack your bags now and wait for the bell," she says.

I caught up with my art homework at break so I didn't see my friends again until lunch. From what I gathered in English, neither of them were happy about the monsters returning to the surface, and I ended up getting an ear full of it for a solid half an hour. Amy and Jenna are as good as debating as they are as pissing me off whilst I'm trying to eat my sandwich. With two minutes left until the bell Jenna turns to me. "what do you think (Y/N)?"

My mind goes blank. "Whatever's whatever i guess... We don't really have a say in it anyway".

"I bet you'll be making friends with all of them by the end of the week" Amy laughs. I laugh too.

"I like being nice to people, sue me," I say.

"they're not people (Y/N), they're monsters," Amy replies quickly. she still holds her cheery impression, but her words somehow sting like salt in a wound on behalf of those she insulted. The bell goes. I say goodbye to them, and we part ways to our separate forms. I told them earlier that my dad would be picking me up from school today so that I can walk home alone. We only have one more lesson until the end of the school day.

I wait for an extra five minutes for Amy and Jenna to leave together before I leave myself. I walk slowly, as I'm usually faster than the two girls, and I take an alternative route home to avoid bumping into them. there's a dog walking route that passes behind my house of which I haven't passed through in months. I usually walk through that area when I'm sad, as it always makes me feel calm. I can feel a sense of heaviness in the air as if it's going to rain, so I decide not to head down there today.

My house smells of fresh flowers and lemon tea. It's a nice scent to walk into at the end of any kind of day. Tomorrow is another day.
