I sit my butt down on the bar stool. I click the time on my phone. It reads:

Damn. My buddies would be late again. They were late every week. I order a round of beer and wait in my chair. My thoughts drift to Ruth. Wait, where was she again? Oh, right, she had to travel to New York for work.
It seemed like now Ruth was always traveling. I sigh. As I order another round of beer, the bells above the doors jingle and in walks....
Shailene.
My thoughts jumble up completely. It's like they've turned into excited little girls.
Oh my god, it's Shailene!! She's here!! At Pemberton's!! She must come every week!! Wait, she's alone? Oh my god, should I confront her? That would be creepy, right? But I've been looking for her!! Wait, Theo, slow the frick down. What?!? You're engaged to Ruth!! So stop staring at Shailene and drink your beer.
But instead, I get up from my stool and walk towards her. Indeed, she's alone. I speak up.
"Hi, Shailene! Didn't think I'd see you here!"
She looks surprised for a second then regains her composure. "Hi! Um, Theodore!" She blushes.
"Do you come here every week?"
"Um, yeah, every Friday."
"Wow, same."
She says cautiously, "Uh, Theodore, so this may sound kind of creepy, but I was kinda looking for you...?" She smiles cautiously.
"Oh, um, okay. Is there anything you need?"
"Umm....nothing, it's just...uh...I..don't know."
I laugh loudly and put my arm around her thin shoulders. She tenses up for just a millisecond, then she calms again.
We laugh for a while and then Shailene says, "You're hilarious, Theodore."
"Please, call me Theo. And I could say the same about you."
"Haha, Theo. Now you call me Shai." She pokes my big chest and bursts out laughing. Shai has such a hearty laugh that can make almost anyone smile and laugh along.
"Well, Shai, it was nice having your acquaintance."
"Ditto. Shall we meet again soon?"
"Of course."
We exchanged numbers and she was off. Damn, Shai was beautiful, funny, and just absolutely lovable. Right now I didn't care whatsoever if I was engaged to Ruth.
Shai just seemed much more alive.
