Theo calls me a few weeks after he left. We've talked a few times before, but we can't talk often because he has duties everyday. Here's how our conversation goes:
Him: Heyyy, Ladybug.
Me: Hi, Theo.
Him: You still in one piece?
Me: Pretty much.
Him: You haven't been penetrated by some random guy on the street?
Me: Oh, my Lord, help him.
Me: And, no.
Him: Ha. Good.
Him: Hey, Shailene, you okay?
Me: Um, yes?
Him: You sound unsure.
Me: I'm fine, really. Why do you ask?
Him: Hey, can you video chat me?
Me: Isn't the connection pretty bad?
Me: And, it's like 1:00 in the morning.
Me: Please, Theo-
Him: I'm gonna call you.
Me: Oh, oka-Theo hung up then. He skyped me a few minutes later. I hadn't seen his face in a month, so I was a bit startled when I saw him. His brown hair was ruffled and his smile was wide, yet there was something sad in it.
"Hey, Shailene!" His smile filled my heart up until it bursted to pieces. His eyes were the opposite. They were filled with a bottle sadness.
"Hi, Theo." Seeing his face can't help but make me smile and have butterflies flutter in my chest.
"I have to tell you something."
Oh. No.
"Uh, what is it?" I try not to have my face washed in worry.
"Shailene, you understand that war is a terrible thing, and that lots of people get killed, and that-"
"What are you trying to say, Theo?"
"Shailene, I know you well enough to know that you're a very strong woman, and you have very strong opinions, and-"
"What is it?"
"Shailene?"
"Yeah?"
"Do me a favor and don't interrupt me after every sentence."
"Okay, yeah, sorry."
"You're a very strong-willed person but you must learn to let go."
"Theo," I said, the worry rushing up, "what, what are you talking about?!"
"That we fight a terrible war and that sacrifices are made and that things happen to the people who fight the war. You know that these things happen, Shailene, and there's nothing we can do about it. This whole thing is inevitable."
I take a sharp breath that doesn't sound like me at all. "W-what whole thing?"
Theo sighs. I wish he wouldn't do this. I wish he wouldn't. "I know you know, Shai."
I don't say anything. I don't want to believe what Theo's saying. It can't happen.
"Shai?"
Theo sighs again. "I'll say it to you since you won't believe it if I don't."
My head is spinning rapidly, what the hell is happening?
His voice rings through me and bursts me to pieces, like having a bomb threw at you.
"I may die in this war."
