[chapter four]phone calls

[the piece of cherry bubblegum placed on his bedside table was taunting him]

stanley uris laid in bed not able to sleep due to the thoughts running through his head,he wanted to know lolita better but the thought of disobeying his father prevented him from doing so

it wasn't helping him that the piece of cherry bubblegum placed on his bedside table was taunting him,all he could hear was "come on stanley,have a taste and see why the girl finds it so fascinating" it was driving him insane

that day at the diner when she popped her bubblegum in his mouth he barely got to taste the flavouring of it but he still got a hint of the taste cherry before he spat it out

the boy sat up and reached toward the bubblegum,he had it in the palm of his hands and looked at it intently trying to see if it was tampered with

after doing a complete examination of the bubblegum he unwrapped it hesitantly,something written in black pen caught his attention

he placed the unwrapped gum back on his bedside table and held the wrapper in between his thumb and
index finger,he brought it closer to his eyes and saw numbers

a phone number

"no way" he muttered falling back onto his bed,he felt embarrassed seeing the girl left her phone number in the wrapper of the bubblegum for him

no one of the opposite gender has ever gave him so much attention and he wasn't sure how to feel about it,now knowing he had the girls number made everything worse

"just call her and tell her to stop harassing you" stanley muttered to himself,it was harassment in his head after all he stated he wasn't allowed to speak to her again and now he some how ended up with her phone number

he grabbed his landline on his bedside table not taking another glimpse at the cherry bubblegum that was beside it,he placed the landline in his lap and began to type in the numbers

"3,4,8" stanley whispered the last few digits,the phone began to dial and the sound of ringing filled his ears.he was growing anxious each second that passed and every ring she didn't answer

lolita holly sat on her kitchen floor popping raspberries into her mouth one by one when she heard her telephone in her bedroom ring

eager to see who the mystery caller was at nine at night she ran upstairs not bothering to close the fridge behind her nor put away the food she pulled out to snack on

opening her bedroom door she belly flopped onto her bed and picked up the phone just as the last ring played, "the holly residence,how may i help you?" lolita spoke into the phone as maturely as she could,stanley went mute unaware of how to answer

"hello?" lolita spoke up once more,stanley finally opened his mouth and answered but with multiple voice cracks to follow

"uh hi it's stanley,i needed to tell you something" lolita giggled at the multiple voice cracks she heard from the other end of the phone

"so i assume you ate the bubblegum?" she questioned,her smile hadn't left her face since she picked up the phone "you called to tell me you changed your mind correct? you want to be friends!! i am beyond happy"

stanley gulped as he listened to the girl explain to him how ecstatic she was to finally get closer to him,how could he tell her the real reason he called was to threaten her until she agreed to leave him alone completely

the last thing he wanted to do was hurt the girls feelings,he had two options he could follow his father's orders and stay away from her or he could figure out lolita's fascination with cherry flavoured bubblegum

his growing curiosity won and for once in his life he was going to disobey his father's orders to figure out the mystery beneath the cherry bubblegum

"of course that's why i called"
