"Mom this isn't going to work." I said as we taped flyers on mail boxes in my neighborhood.

"Do you want to make some money or not?" I didn't reply. I did want to make some money for when my parents leave for their trip.

My mom and I put a few more flyers out and headed back home for dinner.

"Hey dad, what's for dinner?" I asked and sat down at the counter.

"Burgers." He brought in the plate of patties from the grill and and took out the condiments.

"Dish up!" My brother, Nick, came down the stairs and we all made our meals.

Nick and I went to the basement to watch the baseball game. We do it every time out team plays in the summer, just us two.

"Do you want a soda?" I asked.

"Uh, yeah. A coke peasant."

"Don't be mean or I won't get you one." I poked his cheek and went over to the fridge. Then the home phone rang.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hi, is this Rose Harris?"

"Uh, yes ma'am." I replied.

"Oh, thank goodness! I know this is short notice, but can you babysit tonight? Our babysitter got sick at the last minute." I smiled. I literally put the flyers out two hours ago.

"Oh sweetie, I'm Mrs. Grier by the way." I could hear her cheerfulness.

"Okay, nice to meet you! What time should I come over?"

"Twenty minutes? My address is 559 Lake Norman Drive." She said.

"That's perfect! We are just finishing up dinner here and I'll be over. If I may ask, how old are your kids?"

"She's four, heads up, she loves horses." I laughed a little just to be polite.

"Okay, I'll be over in twenty minutes! Thank you!"

"See you soon!" She hung up.

I quickly finished my burger and packed a few toys for her.

"Hey mom, I have a job in like three minutes, I gotta go!"

"Already? Oh, okay, well, bye." She kissed my forehead and I went out.

She lived two houses across the street away from mine. I rang the doorbell and a tall lady answered the door.

"Oh, are you Rose?" She asked.

"Yes ma'am."

"Come in sweetie." I went in and their house smelled like a cinnamon scent from bath and body works.

"Just so you know, Skylynn isn't mine, haha she's my husband's ex wife's daughter. But we're very close so w're keeping her for the week. Contact information is on the counter and Skylynn isn't allergic to anything so you should be good there."

"I'm leaving mom!" A boy came down the stairs and headed towards the garage door.

"Rose this is my son, Nash. Nash, Rose is going to babysit Skylynn tonight."

"Okay, bye mom." Mrs. Grier rolled her eyes and I placed my bag on a kitchen chair.

"Okay, we have to go now. Skylynn!" She shouted.

"Yes." She sprung up from the bottom of the stairs.

"Hi, I'm Skylynn!" She held out her hand.

"I'm Rose."

"I like that name! Mom can my name be Rose?" I shook her hand and smiled.

"No your name is Skylynn. Bye honey." She kissed Skylynn and left with her husband.

The babysitting job went great. We played on the trampoline in the backyard, played hide-and-seek inside, made brownies, and watched six episodes of Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. Soon it was 9:00 pm and Skylynn was tucked into bed.

"Skylynn you have to fall asleep now." I turned out the light.

"No! I wanna play!"

"Skylynn, it's time for bed. Go to bed and I'll come back every time to babysit you."

"You will?" She asked.

"Yes I will, I promise."

"Pinky promise?" She held out her tiny pinky.

"Pinky promise." I locked pinkies with her and turned on her night light.

"Good night Skylynn."

"Good night Rose."

I went downstairs and cleaned up the kitchen from when we made the brownies. Then, went back to the living room and sat on my phone for a while.

"Thanks for the ride!" I heard a shout from the garage. Someone walked in and I heard noises from the kitchen.

"Hello?" I asked. He fell.

"Sorry, sorry." I said laughing.

"Here let me help you up." I held out a hand and pulled him up.

"It's okay, not to be rude or anything, but, who are you?"

"I'm Rose, I'm babysitting Skylynn."

"Oh, I'm Hayes, her half brother."

"I didn't mean to scare you by the way, that was an accident."

"You're fine." He finally looked up at me.
