The next day was a Sunday. We were supposed to go to our new classrooms and choose our desks and lockers, clean the classroom, unpack our stationery and the new books we'd been given for the session and meet our class teacher for the year. My friend, Kristi, came from her class to help me out. Kristi was in 5D which was on the first floor of the Senior school building. My class, 5A, was on the ground floor. She, being the organized artsy person she was, was already done arranging and decorating her locker so she came to help me out of my hopeless situation. She actually came to laugh at me and tease me for being disorganized but I blackmailed her into helping me out. You gotta love that kind of friendship.
At the sound of the lunch bell, we finished up the last of our work and made our way to the dining hall.
"So who's on your table?" She asked as we got nearer to my house section.
I shut my eyes and groaned."Michael from 5B and some random juvies."
"I'm guessing you're not too pleased."
I made a pained face. "Understatement of the century. He sat in my lap throughout supper yesterday. My lap. Kris, that boy is a menace and I'm definitely not trying to get to know him better."
"Well, he's not in my class but we had a few electives together last year. He seems pretty chill. Insanely smart but also super hyper and playful. He's a good person. A bit annoying, but good nonetheless."
While she was talking I locked eyes with the boy who was the current topic of discussion. He was just coming into the dining hall with a couple of his friends. He removed his gaze from mine and smirked visibly. I was confused and turned my head in the direction he was now looking. He was striding purposefully towards our table, his eyes locked on a target. I focused my gaze. Oh sugarsticks. My chair.
"Uhuh, yeah, I'm sure, hey Kris try to keep up yeah?" I broke away and began speed walking to my table.
Michael and I locked eyes again and he raised an eyebrow and smirked, walking faster now. I could hear Kris telling me to slow down in the background. No way. I am not losing my birthright to this idiot.
He made it to the seat a second before and sat with a smirk. I smiled back and sat on the edge making him scoot over a little. I put more pressure on his side and tried to push him off but he resisted me. I pushed as hard as I could with my butt and he eventually gave way and fell to the ground.
It was my turn to smirk. "Never underestimate the power of my bottom. Now be a good boy and sit there." I pointed at the stool to my right.
At this point, Kristi had finally made it to our table. "You guys are such babies, gosh!"
"But I won though. You saw right. I totally won that. I am the official head and Queen-superior of this table", I said triumphantly.
Someone cleared their throat and I looked around to see everybody seated and watching.
"Hehehe. So that's happened. How's everyone doing this afternoon?" I was really good at handling embarrassment.
"My butt hurts", said an insignificant person to my right.
I stuck my tongue out at him and turned to Kristi. "Come sit here for lunch. You won't be caught. It's only the second day after all. Pleaaaaase?" I begged.
"Sure, why not? I hate my table too. Make room for me. I'm going to get my food." She turned and went to her house section which was on the opposite side. She was in Sapphire house.
My table members were all staring at me. "I don't hate you guys. She's just exaggerating", I tried to explain myself but the damage was already done.
---------------
"There are eleven princesses."
"I'm pretty sure there are only ten. Check your facts."
I started counting out the princesses on my hand, "snow white, Aurora, Belle, Ariel...", when I was interrupted by Michael.
"There are twelve princesses."
I looked at him in disbelief. "What did you just say?"
"There are twelve Disney princesses. You're both wrong", he said and went back to eating.
Kristi and I did the fact check and counted eleven.
"Plus Sofia", he contributed.
"Bro."
"Brooooooooo", I said, shaking his arm, "you're a total Disney boy. Who would have thought?"
He grabbed his arm from my grip. "I am not. I just happen to have a little sister who watches a lot of Disney and I don't have the freedom to change TV channels."
"Okay, Disney boy", I teased.
"I really am not. Don't call me that", he protested.
"Sure thing, Prince Michael", Kristi quipped.
"I am NOT a Disney boy!" He refused loudly.
"Sure", we both said at the same time.
"Good. So both of you shut up and face your food."
For a while, it was quiet except the scraping of metal cutlery on metal plates (tragic, I know). Until Kris looked up and cleared her throat.
"So... Who's your favorite princess?"
