The sun shone brightly, even though the cats of BrightClan knew that it wouldn't last long. Leaf-bare was arriving and leaves were pouring down from the trees into piles of crunching dry foliage. Squirrels and blue-jays hurried around collecting acorns, while snakes and frogs dug deep into hibernation.
A shriek rose from the evergreen forest, followed by thundering pawsteps and the hissing of Clan cats.
A small white she-cat leaped forward and pinned a ginger she-cat to the leafy forest floor. The ginger warrior snarled at her Clanmate and rolled over on her back to escape the white warrior. The white she-cat turned and faced the ginger she-cat. Heartbeats later the ginger cat leaped at the other cat. The white warrior dodged her Clanmate just in time to send her flying straight into a pile of dead leaves.
"Ha! You missed!" the white she-cat purred with amusement as the ginger she-cat crawled out of the leaves looking quite annoyed.
The ginger warrior groaned. "It's not fair! You're always better than me, ever since we were kits!" she complained.
The white cat padded close to her sister and sat down. "Hmm, true. Even though we were just warriors today. Yesterday we were still apprentices." she meowed.
A nearby bush rustled. The ginger she-cat spun over to get ready for an intruder. Relief swept over her when she realized that it was just BrightClan's deputy, Bristleflame.
"How's training?" the brown-and-yellow cat asked, nodding to both she-cats.
The white cat flicked her tail playfully over her sister's muzzle. "Great! But Applestem keeps missing me." she mewed.
Applestem dipped her head low in embarrassment. What would the deputy say to her?
To her surprise, Bristleflame turned to her sister instead and commented angrily. "Marshmallow, you should be humble to your sister!"
Marshmallow lifted her chin and meowed confidently. "I will," she promised as Bristleflame padded away.
"Come on, let's head back to camp." Applestem mewed to her sister.
The white she-cat nodded. "Race you back!" she challenged and dashed away.
Applestem scrambled after her. "No fair! You've had a head start!" she yowled.
Once they've reached back to camp, the warmth of the sun faded away. The camp was built on a hill and the wind reached it easily. The trees swayed as if they had minds of their own. Leaves fluttered down and landed on Applestem's ginger pelt. She shook them off.
Sneezewillow emerged from the warriors' den, sneezing and coughing. The white tom head-ed towards the medicine cat's den.
Brightstar greeted the two warriors. "Back from training, Applestem and Marshmallow? I'd advise you not go see Greenfern right now. Her den is full of sick warriors and she is pretty busy. I heard that you've beaten Applestem again, Marshmallow?" the golden-and-gray she-cat's gaze drifted to the small white she-cat. Their eyes met. Applestem could tell that her leader's eyes were gleaming with amusement while her sister's eyes were glittering with humbleness.
"She'll get better, right Applestem?" Marshmallow turned to face the ginger she-cat.
I hoped that that was true. Applestem thought. "Uh, probably." she answered uncertainly.
Brightstar nodded. "I'll leave to check on Greenfern. That poor kit is tired from her restless nights treating sicknesses. Sneezewillow is so weak he could easily get another sickness right after Greenfern cured his last one." she turned stalked off.
Brightstar had always addressed Greenfern as a "kit" for no reason. Applestem wondered if her leader had ever called herself a "kit".
Applestem trotted to the fresh-kill pile and fished out a shrew. She took a huge bite out of it.
When will I ever be as good as my sister? Ever since her name was Marshkit she'd beaten me at every battle. I'm just glad that there isn't a reason for me to fight these days. Applestem thought as Marshmallow sat down beside her.
"Trust me, you'll get better." she said and began devouring a mouse.
Ha! I wish! Applestem thought to herself.

Leaves rustled as two cats scrambled through the branch of the oaks. The remaining leaves of the trees fluttered down onto the forest floor as the two cats both plunged down from a branch.
"They'll get what they deserve." muttered a cream she-cat.
The other gray she-cat nodded, agreeing to her friend.
A growl rose from the cream cat's throat. "Orangestar made a coward such as Whitestripe deputy. Can you imagine? I would've made a better leader than him any-day!"
The gray she-cat tasted the air.
"There's a patrol around here about a few fox-lengths away. We should disguise our scent." she warned her companion.
The cream she-cat leaped into a pile of leaves.
The gray cat snorted. "That won't cover up your scents!" she scoffed.
Her friend popped back up. "I didn't pay much attention back when I was Greenspot's apprentice." she mewed and stuck her head back in.
The gray she-cat spun around and skirted into an abandoned old raccoon den in a nearby oak tree hole. The stale raccoon scent washed over her fur.
"--Shredheart's dead, Whitestripe was made deputy, then Lemonheart got kicked out of the Clan by challenging Whitestripe and Orangestar, after that Shredheart's brother Softmud died, and now Snowberry's expecting Orangestar's kits and needs her sister Silverleaf to take her place as the medicine cat. So many changes these moons. I just hope that no more changes would happen now." a familiar tom's voice reached the cream she-cat's ears. She dove deeper into the pile of leaves, making a faint rustling sound.
She smelt OrangeClan.
Greenspot. The scent of her old mentor and former best friend filled her nose. How I wish I coud just leap out of the leaf pile and tell him how much I've missed him! She shook away that mouse-brained thought. No, she told herself, I cannot do that. I am Lemonheart. The cat whose personality is sourer than her name.
She was Lemonheart.
A/N: SOOOOOO YEAH! I've actually finished chapter one in one piece! *claps for self* I didn't die or anything! Well that's a first XD. BTW you people can start guessing who's who now. Have a nice day/evening!
