After admiring the view for a few more moments, I walked over to the now open boot (trunk) and pulled out my backpack and other bags from the boot (trunk) and closed the boot (trunk).
Looking around, I noticed everyone crowded around a sign and map post. I jogged over to join them and see what we were doing.
"We can follow this track here, and it will lead up to the mountains. I found a pretty decent camping spot up there last time I was here" Drake goes on to explain where we can will staying and heading pointing at different locations on the map. "We should get there right before the sunsets..." He added looking down at his watch.
"But that's like four hours..." Lydia said sounding a little shocked at the sound of a long hike.
"Yeah, so we better get a move on" Drake chuckled as he started walking and passed under a moss covered wooden gateway, different bags strapped to his back and the rest of us following closely behind him.
We had been walking for about twenty minutes, with the occasional halts to point at small critters, for me to take photos of a critter or something I found interesting, even take some of everyone else as we travelled. I thought at least someone would have complained by now. But everyone was happy and relaxed. How I wished that lasted...
We had been walking for about two more hours, occasionally stopping for a breather or to take photos. Also managing to stop for a mini lunchbreak and long enough for me to do a quick sketch of a bird in a tree. We were all reasonably quiet, besides Drake occasionally telling us one of his camping stories, and Gordon replying with a smart remark.
Making our way up a reasonably steep hill, Donna being in the lead suddenly came to a halt. "What's that?" She suddenly asked pointing at something ahead of us, while holding her backpack strap with her other hand.
All of us cautiously walked up behind Donna, looking out for what she was pointing out. Reaching her, we spotted something yellow flapping in the breeze. Exchanging glances between the five of us, we cautiously but curiously walked over to the yellow object.
Reaching the yellow object, we discovered it was streams of tape with bold black words.
"POLICE LINE DO NOT CROSS"
"I think this is where the hunter was murdered last week..." Drake said, his voice quieter as his eyes quickly scanned everything in the taped off section.
"I-is that blood?" Donna stuttered pointing at something in the scene.
Hesitantly, I looked over to where Donna was pointing. Holding down a vomit, I felt sick and dizzy at the sight.
In the middle of the crime scene and dirt path sat a fairly large rock. But on top of that rock was a puddle of dried blood, that also trailed down the side of the rock, down into the leaf litter below.
"Yeah...I think so" Drake replied trying to hide the fear in his voice, his eyes glued to the rock.
"Are those bullet holes?!" Gordon said, but more like yelled as his eyes widened looking at another thing in the scene.
My eyes rapidly scanning the scenery, they landed on a tree with multiple small holes in its trunk. The bark around each hole being chipped and missing unevenly.
"Y-yes..." Drake replied, the fear in his slipping out for a quick second as a stutter.
Lydia whimpered, and quickly hugged me, hiding her head in my chest, letting out quiet sobs.
Not knowing what else to do in that situation, I slowly wrapping my arms around Lydia, not knowing what I should do.
"Come on, let's go the other way around" Drake spoke up breaking his gaze from the crime scene and back towards us, then made a shooing motion with hands to get us moving the way we came.
