rainy day blues

marceline plopped down on her bed and stared at the ceiling. her eyes fluttered shut. the only thing she could think of was bubblegum. her smile, her laugh, the taste of her lips... she'd give anything to be hers again. the rain hit her roof as the cracks started to leak. a drop fell on her forehead as she remembered their break up...

two years ago...

marceline was coming home from finn and jake's house. it was nothing more then their weekly jam session. she unlocked her door. as it opened, she peered into her kitchen where none other than bubblegum was sitting. she smiled. she floated over there and draped her arms over her shoulders. she gently kissed her neck.

"hey bonabelle." she whispered happily into her ear. she gently lifted the princess' chin and kissed her soft lips. she walked over and took a seat across from her. bubblegum's head was down, her light pink hair covered her face. marcy took her hand.

"is anything wrong?" she asked. bubblegum looked up. her hair was messy and her eyes red from crying. "hey... sweetheart, what's going on?"

"we can't be together anymore." bubblegum softly replied.

"what?" marceline begged. "what do you mean?" she dropped bubblegum's hand and bit her lower lip.

"i can't do this anymore, marceline!" she yelled.

"do what?" tears were streaming down both of their faces.

"this is wrong-- i'm a princess and you're... you!"

"what's that supposed to mean?" marceline hissed.

"it means we're over!" marceline got up and started to yell,

"you said you loved me! i don't understand what's going on, you can't leave me! you're my everything!"

"goodbye, marceline." bubblegum said, sternly. she got up and proceeded to leave.

"go! don't come back! i don't need you anyways!" she collapsed to the floor crying. she heard her front door slam shut. she pulled the engagement ring out of her pocket and threw it at the wall. she had planned on proposing to her next week on their three year anniversary. forever always ends to soon, she thought. she pulled her shirt over her legs and clung unto her knees with a new found hole inside her heart.

present day...

marceline's train of thought ended when she heard her phone ring. she sighed and wiped away her tears. it doesn't matter if it'd been ten years or ten days after their break up, it was always just as painful.

"hello?" she said as she picked up her phone.

"hey!" a cheerful voice called out. "it's bubblegum."

"oh, hey... what's up?" since their break up, only a few months ago did they again become friends. well, not completely friends. more bonded together by finn and jake. marcy was shocked to hear from her, this was actually the first time she had talked with her privately since their split.

"nothing much... just wanted to say hi." bubblegum replied.

"come on bonabelle, you never just call to say hi." she said with a soft chuckle. marcy could tell the princess was smiling now.

"maybe so." she softly responded.

" so, how's everything in your fancy kingdom?"

"it's all rather good, thank you." there was a pause. marceline could tell she wanted to say something just was having trouble getting out the words. "i miss you."

"i miss you too. i'm sorry how things ended between us." there was a sense of longing in marcy's voice. she nervously bit her bottom lip. her palms began to sweat and she grabbed the phone tighter than before.

"there's no need to apologize... i just, it was wrong of me. i thought that... never mind." marceline knew she wasn't up for her prying, but she couldn't help herself.

"what? please tell me. and you know you're going to budge at some point. save yourself some time and tell me now." marcy said, hoping that she'd just tell her straight off the bat.

"i suppose you're right. well, i just... i'm not sure how everyone would've reacted if they knew about... well, us. and i know that i'm in charge and could make sure no one did anything, but i might loose everyone's respect. and more importantly, you could be hurt in the process." marceline could tell that she was crying now. whenever bubblegum cried, it was soft, gentle, and heart wrenching. tears would stream down her cheeks and she'd quickly wipe them away with the back of her hand before they reached her chin. if marceline was with her when she cried, bubblegum would lay her head in marceline's lap and marcy would stroke her hair and whisper affirmations until she stopped crying or fell asleep.

"bonabelle..." marceline began.

"no, i know. i get it. i just, i miss you. i miss... us."

"i do too." marceline felt a bit of blood slide down her lip. she'd been biting it too hard in attempt to calm her anxiety.

"what's going to become of all this?"

"i'm not sure... i guess whatever we want to come of it? speaking of, what do you want to happen now?" marcy's eyebrows pressed together, her face fashioned into a confused frown. she tapped her fingers rapidly against the side of her leg. bubblegum's response seemed to take forever. she was deep in thought, and whatever she was about to say had the power to change everything.

"i want us to be together again. because when i'm without you, it's hard for me to manage. all i think of is you and i work so hard to distract myself. but to no prevail. i--" her voice was shaky from crying and worry.

"i'll meet you in the palace. ten minutes." she hung up the phone,  plucked the old engagement ring off of her nightstand, grabbed her coat, and rushed outside. maybe the future was not theirs to tell, but at least for today, it was no longer just marceline and bubblegum.

they were something more.
