“Stephan!” Quinn shrieked when she recognized who he was. Her secret boyfriend was being held up by two larger guys that Stephan was close with on the football team.
“What the hell happened?” The guy who poured our drinks inquired.
Quinn and I started clearing bottles from the island in the middle of the kitchen. The larger of the 2 guys, Brad, lifted Stephan onto the table.
“We don’t know… Brad and I found him passed out in the guest bedroom when we were…” Brett trailed off as he helped Brad.
“Oh God,” Quinn let out a strangled sob as she pushed his matted hair out of his face. His one eye was swollen shut and his nose was definitely broken, and the reason for all of the blood on his face. He had bruises up and down his arms and I resisted from crying out myself.
“I need a wet towel, preferably warm. Someone get a car started, we need to take him to emergency.” I heard myself say, I was surprisingly calm for someone who was involved in all of this happening. How could Anthony and his buddy be capable of such a thing? I shuddered involuntarily.
“I’ll go start my car,” Brett said, leaving the room.
I carefully cleaned Stephan’s face as Quinn cried, arms sprawled over his chest. My heart ached for her, it truly did. But now I know that Stephan won’t step near her… Not after this. The knife in my stomach started to stab me repeatedly as I stroked her back and cleaned up Stephan’s face.
“We need to get him out of here,” Brad said, noting that Stephan’s nose wouldn’t stop bleeding. His arms were growing darker by the minute.
“Okay,” Brett walked in and they both picked him up again.
“I need to go with them,” Quinn said. I held her back though.
“You can’t go with them,” I told her.
“You don’t understand,” she shook her head and wrapped her arms around me.
“It’s okay,” I stroked her back again. She cried into my shoulder.
“I need to be there for him,” Quinn tried to explain without telling me her actual relationship status with him.
“I’m going to take you home, okay?” I told her, the tone in my voice noted that the question was rhetorical.
“No,” she shook her head, but I grabbed her by the arm and we left the house. Multiple people came up to us to ask us what had happened, but we ignored them as we walked down the street. I pushed Quinn into the passenger seat and she pressed her head against the window as I entered the driver’s seat.
“Do you have your phone?” I looked over at her. She gave me a curt nod.
“Call Stephan’s mom, I doubt anyone has told her what is going on.” I bargained with her.
“Alright,” she pulled out her phone and had a hushed conversation over the phone, none of which I picked up. My guess is that Stephan’s mom knows that they are still together, just another person keeping another secret.
“She is on her way to emerge.” Quinn said after hanging up.
“Good,” I nodded, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
“Please take me there,” Quinn practically begged.
“I can’t do that,” I shook my head and turned onto her street.
“We’ve been dating for 4 years!” Quinn yelled.
“And he’s an asshole!” I told her, pulling up to her house. “You guys broke up for a reason.”
“We didn’t actually break up, I’ll just get my mom to take me.” Quinn admitted and went to open her door. I locked it just in time though.
“I’m guess your mother doesn’t know Stephan tried to rape you. Because if you were my daughter I wouldn’t let you see that douche bag.” I replied calmly.
“How do you know about that?” She jerked her head to me.
“Why didn’t you tell any of us you were still with Stephan?” I answered her question with a question.
“Because you don’t understand unconditional love!” Quinn hit her hand on the dashboard. She tried to leave the car again but it wouldn’t budge. She started to cry again.
“Marceline had told me what you wouldn’t.” I finally answered her question. “Why didn’t you tell me anything about your relationship with Stephan? What was the point in that?”
“Because I love Stephan, and I knew you would judge me if I went back to him.” Quinn wiped away her tears with the hood of her sweater.
“I’m not judging you Quinn.” I said finally, turning around to face her.
“I just don’t feel like I deserve anything less or anything more than what Stephan gives me. He’s my world, I love him so much and just because he thinks with his dick doesn’t mean he doesn’t love me as well.” Quinn said finally. “Now please, let me out of this car.”
“Promise me you won’t see him tonight,” I bargained.
“Fine,” she said honestly. I couldn’t stop her from seeing him tomorrow though, I knew that much.
“Goodnight,” I told her, unlocking the door.
“It won’t be,” she left.
I opened up my cell phone the minute she walked out the front door.
“Charity?” Anthony asked in a breathless voice.
“We need to talk.” I told him.
“What’s wrong?” He noticed the tone in my voice.
“I was the one who has to clean up Stephan’s bloody nose before they rushed him off to emerge.” I said, the tears were flowing now.
“Shit, okay, where do you want to meet?” Anthony asked quickly.
“My bedroom, 11 o clock.” I said, sniffling.
“Don’t cry, I’ll explain everything.” Anthony said calmly.
I took a deep breath and sped home, trying to stop myself from being overwhelmed by the guilt and swerving off of the road into oncoming traffic.
