“So where are your friends this fine evening?” Anthony asked as we sat on the back porch of Stephan’s house.
“They are preoccupied,” I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. I watched as someone jumped off of the treehouse in the backyard into the crystal clear pool. There were about 40 people out back here; I guess people got bored of grinding on each other in the living room so they wanted to take a dip. But Anthony and I were sitting on the steps leading to the backdoor of the house.
“I didn’t think the infamous four ventured far from each other,” Anthony said smugly.
“They are actually preoccupied with members of your sex, so excuse me,” I rolled my eyes and smoothed out my dress.
“Popularity comes with its drawbacks I guess,” Anthony murmured.
“You would know,” I retorted.
“I wouldn’t,” Anthony shook his head. “I’m not popular.”
“Are you kidding me? Everyone knows who you are, everyone talks about you.”
“Wow, really?” He said sarcastically. “Popularity and infamy are two completely different things.”
“Not in high school,” I corrected him.
“You’re deluded,” Anthony shook his head again, if he did that anymore his hair would lose all of its form.
“No, I’m serious. I don’t consider popularity to be high heels and make up and being invited to parties.” He opened his mouth to say something but I put my hand up. “Yes, I do those things, and it leads other people to think I’m popular. Which in turn does, make me popular, that is. But what I consider to be popularity is when someone’s name is constantly in the mouths of others. You, Anthony Ladao, have more gossip spread about you then my friends and I combined.”
“Including Skylar?” Anthony raised an eyebrow.
“Including Skylar,” I nodded. “You are popular, whether you embrace the term or not.”
“I prefer ‘well known’,” Anthony said finally, rubbing his chin. I noticed the slight scruff growing. I wondered what it would feel like cupping his chin and feeling the stubble as we kissed.
Speaking of, the kiss that we had shared in the hall not 20 minutes earlier, he hadn’t touched me since. No slip of the arm around my waist, no butt touching, no physical contact whatsoever. I found it sort of unnerving, even though I still wasn’t over the whole college guy scenario. If it was any other guy I was with, I would have been grateful they hadn’t touched me.
But this was Anthony Ladao, the guy I had been ogling over this whole school year. And right after he kissed me, I had craved more of him. I wanted to add more to the fire in my stomach. But he only flirted in his words, even though I craved more.
“I can only fight for so long,” I shrugged. I started to get up but he touched my hand. I looked at him curiously.
“The term ‘popular’ is so demeaning. Please do not belittle me to something so basic. I hate being labeled okay? So please, don’t take my attitude towards you as arrogance, I’m just ignorant to the gossip that is spread around about me.” Anthony moved his hand away from me. I was so frustrated, I just wanted him to touch me, I didn’t give a fuck about labels.
“For the record, I don’t believe the rumors,” I said honestly.
“You don’t?” Something sparked in his eyes.
“No, I have enough being spread around about me that I’ve learned not to make assumptions of people based on what I hear.” I knew it was all bullshit spilling from my mouth. I knew Anthony was a bad guy; he got involved with a lot of crap around the school. I listened to the rumors just as much as the next person, but I wasn’t going to let him know that. I finally was sitting down and having a conversation with the face too all of the love interests in my dreams, it sounds kind of pathetic, but I had dreams about love and loss, and Anthony played a reoccurring role as the knight in shining armor.
