Goodbye

Her worn features broke into a smile when she saw her
Saw the little girl take her first steps
Ignoring the dull ache in her heart she stepped close
The infantile giggle filling her ears.

She stood there, silent and unmoving,
As she admired the beauty of the childish innocence
The purity in the girls' laugh made the happiness dance on her lips
The unbroken, unshattered sound.

The innocence gradually fading away
She witnessed her grow slowly
A smile still stretched across her face
But it had lost its unbroken beauty
She observed as the bright eyes darkened
She saw the girl curl up as the storm came
The storm majestic and all- consuming
It hollowed her out completely.

Her view now fixed on the broken girl
No longer the ever-happy infant
Now she saw the pain in her heart
As she observed her on the ground, writhing
Writhing in pain she lay there
Her lungs frantic for a source of life.

She finally turned her back at her
The young girl in excruciating misery
She left her behind on the ground
And walked out with her head held high.

She had witnessed the heartbreaking beauty of her younger self
A person that no longer existed
With her little bruised heart
And big glassy tears
She decided she didn't want to be her.

Not anymore.
