Breaking The Surface

I like the way you break out
How you take birth from nothing
How small streaks give rise to you
And you stand there with your beautiful imperfections
On the blank surface

How you are the product of my
Pain, hurt and emptiness
How the void takes your form
The form of my flickering positivity
On the blank surface

Sometimes I see you on my dark skin
Not lines of red but strokes of colour
Sometimes standing as a symbol of
My hope and strength
On the blank surface

I see you black against white
And sometimes colour against colour
How you come alive when I'm dead inside
Swirling patterns and poetic lines
On the blank surface.
