THE DEMISE OF LITTLE JOSIE

IT WAS AN EARLY SATURDAY MORNING, THE SMALL SEVEN YEAR OLD CHILD HAD JUST AWAKENED FROM A DEEP SLUMBER AND A TINY LINE OF SWEAT COVERED HER FOREHEAD. She climbed out of bed and staggered down the hallway into the bathroom to brush her teeth and get ready to go hang out with her three friends - Lucy, Erin, and Sally. They were sweet little girls who would always be nice and polite to Josephine even if the little girl acted strange at times. Josephine finished up getting ready and made her way to the kitchen. They had a small house it wasn't too big due to it being just the three of them and it seemed bigger due to their parents being gone. Josephine and Atticus never really got to experience what it was like having parents because three years after the youngest Rose  was born they had died in a car accident. There was just too much ice on the roads or maybe it was just bad timing because another car had been going above the speed limit and hit them head on. This causing their mother, Janet Rose, and father, Nicholas Rose, to go flying out the front windshield. It was tragic, but no one in town really cared. The town seemed to be cursed or something.

Anyways, Josephine sat down at the small dining table across from Atticus. They both smiled as they listened to the faint sound of Heroes by David Bowie from the small radio as Jason cooked them breakfast like he usually did.

"So what are your plans today, Josie." Atticus asked while she poured the little girl a glass of orange juice. As she handed the cup to Josephine the girl confessed her plans, "Going to Erin's house and playing with her new care bear dolls that she got. It's going to be so much fun!"

"Sounds great—" Jason paused as he set a plate of pancakes in front of both girls before sitting down in his own spot at the table, "—do you need one of us to go with you or walk you down there?"

Josie shook her head repeatedly as she poured loads of syrup on her stack of pancakes, "No! I'm a big girl now. I walked to her house last time with no problem."

"Actually if I recall, big girls still need their family." Atticus retorted at the small girl as they both dug in on their breakfast.

"Atticus and I have to go run some errands in town today so I wrote down the number to Sally's mom on this piece of paper." Jason stated as he slide the paper across the table and Josephine picked it up. She examined it for a second before shoving it in her pocket and eating more pancake.

"Remember stay at Erin's house and don't go anywhere else or talk to strangers." Jason simply reinforced.

"You always tell me this." Josie sighed as she threw her fork and plate into the sink.
