Sometimes I feel like if you just watch things, just sit still and let the world exist in front of you - sometimes I swear that just for a second time freezes and the world pauses in its tilt. Just for a second. And if you somehow found a way to live in that second, then you would live forever.

Adrian insists on walking me to the door even thought I protest that I'll be fine. But he slips besides me, his hands brushing against my back, as shivers travel up my spine.

"Did you ah..." He begins,"Did you have a good time?"

I look at him in surprise, but he seems truly baffled. He seems to have no clue how free he made me feel today. Like I'd been stuck in quicksand and he'd pulled me out.

"I had a wonderful time," I say quickly,"You made me feel so much tonight and I've never felt so deliriously free as I do now. Because of you. So yeah...this was one of the best nights anyone has ever given me."

I realise how quickly I've spoken, and wonder if he even understood or he's thinking how utterly stupid I am. Suddenly he stops, and pulls me to him by my waist.

We only have an inch of space between us and I'm reminded of our first kiss a few minutes ago. He'd been unprepared then. Now, he seems determined and ready.

"I want you." He whispers, and there's something so intimate in his voice, I blush and look anywhere but into his blue eyes which, I know, are locked onto me.

My heart hammers in my chest like a hummingbird batting it's wings against its cage, eager to burst out.

Finally, his gaze falls onto my lips. I lean in further, gauging the distance between us, before our lips touch again.

The same fiery heat burns in my heart , and it travels down and over my body like arcs of lightening. When he presses me closer, I sigh and let myself fall limp as he kisses me.

Before our kiss had been abrupt because someone had been looking at us. Tristan....

Frantically I push Adrian away as I think of Tristan. His sad blue green eyes, lingering on me once more before he turned away with humped shoulders like he'd just lost a fight.

"Maddie." Adrian says my name and I look at him,"I'm sorry if..."

"No it's okay...I liked it." I manage a wavering smile and let Adrian take my hand.

When we reach the door, I look at him again,"Thanks for tonight."

He smiles, and runs his fingers through his dark blonde hair,"Nah it was my pleasure."

A moment of silence passes, but it's pretty comfortable, the night air full of owls hooting and crickets chirping. I even catch sight of a bat diving in as if chasing after a prey.

"I hope," Adrian says, smiling,"That we can do this again someday."

"Yeah sure." I say, and then think of Tristan, and his stupid eyes before chiding myself and removing Tristan from my thoughts immediately.

"Good night Maddie." He says, and lets go of my hand. Then walking backwards, face towards me, he heads back to his car, smiling the whole time like a kid who'd just been given an endless supply of chocolate.

I open the door and head inside, wondering if Mom's asleep or waiting up for me, before closing the door behind me.

My mom is waiting in my room, perched precariously on the edge of my bed while looking through photo albums.

I smile slyly as I slip off my shoes and then hurl into my mother's lap.
