I've underestimated Tristan because I'm barely out the door when I feel someone grab my arm, and whisk me around.

The air conditioner is strong here, and it makes my hair whip into my face. But I still see blue green eyes staring into mine. They clash with his beige shirt and army jacket, but in a way that's attractive.

I avoid thinking about the word attractive while meeting his stare.

"Leaving so soon without even a hi?"

I do the intelligent thing and blink, faking genuine surprise and praying that this ordeal would be over soon. I don't dare look out to the car, where Adrian would be waiting, wondering why I wasn't out yet.

"Your date should've walked with you to the car." He observes, glancing past me. But if seeing his rival annoys him, he doesn't show it.

Suddenly he smiles and turns his eyes back to me,"Ignoring me in public is one thing but ignoring my texts is another. So without further ado..."

He leaves my arm, and leans forward to touch my face,"Can you explain to me why you failed to present yourself at school?"

Annoyance bubbles under my skin. I skip school two or three times every month, and only now he notices, and thinks I owe him an explanation?

Pursing my lips, I cross my arms,"That's none of your business, Tristan."

He winces and I'm surprised too. Was that hurt in his eyes?

"Er okay. Sorry." He holds up his hands,"I was just concerned, that's all. But I bet..." His voice turns bitter,"he knows."

I don't have to be Einstein to know who he is. Okay, so I could have kept silent, but I was really irritated now. We'd been friends for so long, and when I needed one the most, he left me. Everyone did. And now he thinks I owe him an explanation for what's been going on with me for years?

And so I clench my teeth,"Maybe he does."

The doors slide open and Adrian steps in. His face is a mask of indifference as he regards Tristan. Then he turns to me, his features cool.

"Is he bothering you?"

I look at Tris. I expect him to look sad or even slightly affected by what I said, but a cocky grin has spread over his face. A smile so crooked and full of mischief, he looks like that Norse god. What was his name?

Loki.

I suppress the shiver running up my spine.

"Yeah I'm bothering her." Tris admits, the same grin apparent on his face. His posture has changed to one that invites trouble. And I don't like it.

Neither does Adrian, and before he can make a move, the doors slide open once again and a few girls enter. They pass us a curious glance, before moving on past us into the restaurant.

I grab the opportunity, and touch Adrian's arm,"Adrian we should go. It's late and my mom would worry."

But I'm too late. Both boys are now almost on each other's faces and I can almost feel the testesterone charging the air. Any moment, lightning would erupt.

"Come on, Adrian." I almost plead. A few people inside cast us curious glances. I'm scared of the attention we were bringing to ourselves, and panic grips my chest.

"Maybe we should leave this for the tryouts." Adrian growls. The venom in his voice frightens me, and I step away, hurtling against a wall.

Tris only snorts, the same grin plastered on his face,"Maybe we should, but why wait?"

I know both boys were competing for captain's position, but I didn't realise how severe this rivalry was. So deep and deadly.

"Oh please, Jefferson." Tristan smirks, and his eyes turn to me. And then he starts to lower his gaze from my face, and further down, until his gaze rests on my legs. Then he looks to Adrian again,"I'll steal that title and your pretty little girlfriend."

That's when Adrian punches Tristan in the face. Someone screams, and I realise it's me. The impact sends Tristan back, but he recovers quickly before flinging himself on Adrian.

"Stop it. Stop it." I shout, and then people are rushing to us, gasping and pushing Adrian and Tristan away from each other.

Both boys are glaring daggers at each other. Adrian's face us full of anger and he struggles against the man holding him to get to Tristan who's not struggling at all but smiling, blood dripping down his nose.

I turn to Adrian, who closes his eyes and then reopens them. All the anger in them is gone, replaced by weariness. He turns to me.

"I'm sorry." He says, and his voice lingers with regret.

Tris smirks at him, but says nothing. Suddenly anger courses through me, and I wanr to grab Tristan and bang his head against the wall for ruining a perfectly good date.

He's still your history partner, the voice in my head says bitterly.

The man holding Adrian shoots me a warning glance, and then goes back inside. The few people who had come to help finally dispersed, leaving me with two very angry boys.

I grip Adrian's hand, and we go head outside. The night air is chilly and I shiver a little. Suddenly,Tristan who's apparently followed us, says,"Yeah run away like a coward, blondie."

Adrian tenses but I hold him tight,"Don't let him bait you."

And then I decide to punish Tristan. I can't hit him, but I can embarrass him and make Adrian feel much better about tonight. But my plan seems empty and I realise I've never done it before.

I heave a sigh and turn to Tristan,"Thanks for ruining my date."

Surprise lingers in his eyes as he waits for me to do something. I feel Adrian looking at me curiously.

"But Adrian gets something you never can."

"For what?"

"For being the nicest guy I've ever met." I smile nervously, and I pray to God I'm not blushing but I probably am.

Before I can lose my courage and before Tristan's eccentric eyes can hold me back, I put my arms around Adrian's neck, and kiss him.
