"Miss Tara," One of the servants opened the door without even knocking and continued.
"Adelaide sent me to give you this and ordered for you to get ready in ten minutes. If not, then she won't share any more information with you, and you will know nothing of what's happening outside. And she told me that you will want to know whats happening, especially tonight."
The green-eyed servant placed the rectangular white box on the closest chair and left the room with no other word. Not wanting to make Adelaide angry, Tara slowly got up from the bed and she was trying to reach for the chair where the box was, but her weak form was making it hard to walk.
Supporting her body with both of her hands on the wall, she reached for the chair and opened the white box which was nicely decorated with a green ribbon. It was a long red dress, and even though not her style, she couldn't deny it was beautiful.
Not sure what the intention of that gift was, she made her way to the bathroom, the only place where no one risked open the door unannounced. She locked the door and washed her face with cold water since it always helped lessen her headache.
How had she changed!
Tara was long gone and that reflection on the mirror looked like another person.
'No! Stop, Tara. You have no time for sympathizing yourself. It is obvious that the crazy woman has something on her mind, something bad. And there's nothing I can do. Oh, God! Why is this happening? Please help me, please! '
In those moments, she wanted to hit something in order to calm her nerves, but that couldn't be done either. Adelaide was out of her mind and who knows, even the silliest things could make her angry, which meant Tara would be the hurt one after all.
Controlling her anger and allowing fear to guide her, Tara started dressing herself up for the rest of the night. The dress was exactly her size, which surprised the young girl, but she didn't give too much importance to it.
After a good fifteen minutes, she opened the door, only to see Adelaide dressed in a black dress, sat at the top of the table with an indifferent look on her face.
"You are late! Didn't they tell you how I appreciate punctuality?" Adelaide said with the same tranquility that characterized her.
Fear invaded Tara again when thinking of how mad she must be. There was something about Adelaide that Tara had started to understand.
The calmer she looked on the outside, the more frustrated she was on the inside. And in those moments, it was clear she was looking for a reason to say or do something evil.
"I'm sorry! It's ju- just that I wasn't feeling well and it took me a while to pull myself together." Tara explained.
For a moment her voice broke, and Adelaide understood how scared she was. That's why she ordered for the girl to sit on the chair next to her, while the domestics were serving them the Christmas Eve traditional food.
Until that moment Tara had not been able to look at all the delicious food they had served, because the presence of Adelaide was fearful enough to dare focus the attention on food. They both waited in silence until the servants abandoned the room, leaving them all alone, enjoying Christmas Eve.
"I see you never take that necklace off of your neck. I guess it must be from someone close to you. Have you ever wondered why there are exactly four circles?" She asked, but Tara shook her head in denial.
"Anyways, we have plenty of time for everything. Go ahead child, help yourself," Adelaide instructed Tara to eat, and even though she was hungry, food couldn't slip past her throat.
