"Varus, the dinner is ready!", I heard the voice of my mother resound through the forest. I was here all day lately. Becoming a great warrior for Ionia was my dream, and I worked hard to achieve it. My family was not very rich and we lived in a village nearby, but I was satisfied with that. Every morning I went into the forest and practised my archery skills. Day after day, working hard and not giving up, so one day I could defend Ionia with my life and soul.
It was not the usual time that my mother called me for dinner, so I quickly grabbed my bow and made my way home.
"Something up today?", I asked as I sat down at the dinner table next to my father who was reading the Ionian Newspaper. "Today I was talking to the neighbours, they said that the Noxians are rebelling again. I'm kinda worried if they will start another war against Ionia." My father tensed but tried to not make note of it. He once was involved in a war with Noxus, it was a massacre and dozends of soldiers died on both sides. A war was something the Ionians wanted to avoid in any case. "Don't worry mother, I'm sure there's not going to be a war. And even if, until then I'll become the best warrior of Ionia to defend our country!" I put my hand in front of my chest to support my seriousness, but my father layed his hand on my shoulder. "You know that it's not fun, Varus. Be 100% sure if you want to do that, because once you're in, you can't go back. And even if the war will be won, you might not survive until then."
"I know", I answered between clenched teeth. He didn't like the idea of me becoming a warrior, and I knew that very well. Munching the dinner, I didn't speak a single word since then. My mother sighed and stood up. "Thank you for the meal", we said and I took my bow.
"You still want to train this late?" My father appeared behind me as I opened the front door. "Yes, I don't want to do things half-hearted. I'm really serious about it. I want to help defend our country so that all citizens can live in peace." "Then don't waste time talking, show me actions, son." A smile flashed among my face and I nodded. "Of course!", I answered as I ran through the door.
Another arrow smashed into the wood of the big old oak. I've drawn a little target circle on ist bark, so I could practise hitting one specific point. But I always seemed to miss it just a little bit.
"Sigh, another one", I murmured and put a new arrow onto my bow. Straightening my arm, targetting the red circle, I held my breath as adrenaline flowed through my veins. "This time I'm gonna-" Just as I wanted to shoot the arrow, a squirrel jumped off a branch. Surprised by the sound, I lost my target and shoot the arrow ahead the tree. "Shit." I sighed and facepalmed while I cursed the squirrel in my mind for wasting my arrow. Just when I wanted to get the arrow back, I heard a high voice scream from where I shot the arrow. I instantly grew pale. "Did I hit someone..?" My bow dropped onto the grass as I started running until I found my arrow sticking in a red hat on a tree. Underneath it, a little girl with purple hair crouched and held her hands over her head. "H-Hey, you okay? I'm really sorry for the arrow, a damn squirrel surprised me-" At that moment the girl looked up to me with tears in her eyes. Her clear green eyes chained my view, just as green as the leaves above us. "I-It's no problem, I didn't got hit, it just scared the hell out of me." She giggled nervously and stood up. "Is that yours?", I asked pulling the arrow and the hat out of the bark. The hat now had a big hole in the middle. "Yeah, thanks." Quickly sticking it onto her head, her face now was not visible to me anymore.
We stood there for a while, an awkward silence lied upon us two. Switching the arrow in my hand, I got the idea of showing her how to shoot an arrow, since she didnt look like she'd ever done something like that.
The rest of the day we spent shooting arrows through the trees, and talking about our pasts. The girl, whose name was Lulu, seemed to like talking openly about her past and present life. She had been excluded of her society after it came out that she was a sorceress. Since then she had lived with her butterfly Pixie, roaming through the forests and searching for people who'd not be afraid of her.
Her clumsy personality often catched my smile, and since that day she always went with me when I trained my skills.
