stared at the picture of L long and hard. Had it been a few months since he's been dead? Yes. Was I crying? No. I gave L my word. I didn't want the last thing he heard to be a lie. I knew it would take time. but my promise to L will come true . . eventually.

I put the photo back inside my coat pocket and walked through the office door without knocking. A few days ago, before my flight, I called Roger. Roger was the caretaker of all the special children at Wammy's. Watari and I had talked before. That's how I know about him. That old man knew L was getting himself into trouble. My brother just took on more than he could handle, but in a way, I had a feeling his successors and I would make it seem like he won this game all along.

I wouldn't lose faith in my brother, even after he's joined the after life.

Roger motioned me to the seat in front of his desk. His expression was solemn, he must've been grieving as well.

"You must be Matsu." He stated. I averted my eyes, but nodded as a response. "I'm glad that you made it here."

I didn't nod or thank him, but instead spoke abruptly, "We should go see the children." At the time his grey eyes met mine, they were hard. Almost as if all sadness before was gone. He was serious.

"Very well."

With that, Roger stood. We both walked through the halls in silence, as other children ran through the halls or were in class. Finally we made it to one white door that was cracked open.

"Near?" Roger called out.

On the otherside of the door, a young boy responded. "You may come in Roger."

Said man opened the door, and what was in it was shocking. There were a large collection of dominoes all set up to form L's signature. Iover to the boy beside them all. My breath stopped as I glanced at him. He was pale like L and his eyes looked much like his. ust this encounter made me realize that L's death wouldn't hurt as much until I fufilled my promise.

I took a step foreward, making sure not to touch any of the dominos.

"I'm Kaio." I stuck out my hand for the boy to shake. His coal eyes looked at my hand uncertaintly. After a while, I put my hand back in my pocket and cleared my throat.

"Near, you want to catch Kira, right?"

His black eyes stared at me, but he finally spoke.

"Giving away your name to someone you don't know is pretty stupid."

My mouth hung slightly agape before I closed it. Then smirked. Near continued on.

"From what I know so far, Kira can kill people by their name. If I were Kira you'd be dead since you did work with L, correct?" I stared at him, mouth agap, as he twirled a curly white strand of hair between his fingertips. He said it all as if it was nothing.

I pursed my lips.

"You're right and wrong." His gaze, that traveled fown to the floor, turned to me. I looked down at him as he sat on the floor, knees to his chest.

There was a short pause.

"How so?" He questioned.

"You're right because I would only be asking for a death sentence If I gave out my real name. You're wrong becaus that wasn't my name. Plus, Kira needs a first and last name to kill someone."

"Hm." I looked back at Roger, who looked between me and Near worriedly.

"So what was your purpose for comming here?" I turned my attention back to Near.

"I'm here to spark a deal with you, Near. Help me catch Kira, and I'll help you with whatever cases you may have in the future."

For a moment, Near thought about my preposition. The air around us seemed to grow quiet. Only our silent breaths could be heard. His eyes wandered to his dominoes, Then down to the floor boards before finally meeting my anxious brown eyes.

"Roger told me that you were L's sister." He began. "You would be great help in this case if I were open to any partners."

His next words made my stomach sink.

"I'll catch Kira alone and by myself. Without the help of someone that follows there own emotions."

I looked at the floor. My hands clentched at his tone.

"I can see it in your eyes."

His voice was emotionless.

"L's death affected you greatly.

He said it all as if it was nothing.

"I too want to catch Kira, but to surpass L."

With my jaw locked and eyes glaring at the floor, I spoke.

"You couldn't even surpass him if you tried. You would only be a copy of L." My frigid stance loosened. "It's pointless." With that, I turned to Roger.

"What about the other one?"

His eyes lit up slightly.

"Mello is right this way."
