I was so embarassed to be standing on their doorstep with a busted lip. I was just staring down at my feet as they stared at me.

"Come on in here child." Said Ms. Judith gently grabbing my arm. She looked around before closing the door.

"Roi go get the first aid kit out the bathroom and try not to make noise so Curt don't come down here meddlin."

Leroi took off his shoes and ran upstairs in his socks. She motioned for me to sit down at the table and grabbed my face in her hands.

"Pretty girl who did this to you?"

I wanted to cover up and lie for daddy like usual, but I couldn't. He had really hurt me this time.

"I brought Leroi that food and daddy saw me from the parking lot and he got mad saying that I am not supposed to be feedin nobody else but him. "

Leroi came back into the room with the first aid kit and she began working on my busted lip. I just looked down at the floor. I felt bad enough leaving Shayla behind with daddy.

"Ma what's the verdict? Who put they hands on her?" He asked as if I wasn't sitting there.

"well seems like her daddy felt some kinda way about her making you a plate and he jumped on her."

I saw Leroi's jaw clench up into a mean mug reminiscent of Ice Cube.

"Mama I don't care if I got in trouble, but he's a bitch!" He walked over to the wall and punched it splitting open his knuckle. Now you know project walls are made from brick. I was really surprised he cared so much. Ms Judith stopped tending to me and grabbed him from behind hugging him.

"Baby it is okay we gonna help her. Nobody is gonna hurt her again, but you can't think about the past I'm not with him no more."

She grabbed some alcohol pads and he winced as she cleaned up his knuckles which were beginning to swell. I wondered who the him was she referred to but, I assumed it was Leroi's father. She stood there hugging him and then he pushed her away and ran upstairs and I could've sworn I saw a tear fall.

"I......I gotta get going before daddy realize I'm gone." I said getting up from the table.

"Well okay, but I am going to keep an eye on you. You come on down here anytime you hear me?" She said hugging me tightly.

"yes maam." I said walking towards the door.

"wait it;s dark out let me get Roi to walk you home. Roi!!!!!!!"

I waited patiently for him to come back down the stairs and when he did I saw his eyes were bloodshot red.

"Come on mama." He said opening the door for me. I wished we had a longer walk, but I only lived on the end of the building. When we reached my back porch I knocked on the bedroom window three times which was our code knock. Shayla came to the window smiling her bright little smile and waving at Leroi. he blew her a kiss which I thought was sweet.

"um Leroi thanks for walking me home." I said putting my head down. He lifted my chin to look at him.

"Ma you ain't never got to thank me for doing what a real a man does. I know he is your pops, but I ain't with that hittin shit. My mama's first husband beat her so bad that it left her with head trauma. That nigga is on my list. You too beautiful for any man to put his hands on you unless it's to make love to you. Don't you ever forget that."

I smiled at him and out of my character I actually hugged him. he hugged me tight as if he didn't want to release me and then I felt him grab my butt which made me release him.

"Go on now for he get up and I have to kill him." He said smiling.

Shayla raised the wndow and he boosted me up effortlessly. Once I was safely inside he shot me the dueces and walked off towards home. I had just enough time to climb in bed before I heard daddy knock on the door.
