Questions were being thrown everywhere and shouts of excitement erupted. Kim tried to calm them down but that only raised their excitement. She pinched her nose and stopped her attempts when none of them quieting down seemed useless
'So, what's my power animal?' Brenda exclaimed.
'Yours is a dragon'.
'And what's mine?' Briana asked.
Kim frowned. 'I'm not sure. Not even our superiors know'.
'Oh', she said flatly and sat down looking defeated.
'Hey, don't be like that. I'm sure you'll find out soon', she comforted the depressed girl.
Her eyes shone with happiness and yet again more questions came with no break. They were so hyperactive, Kim was sure she was bound to lose her mind. Brenda kept on bouncing on the balls of her feet, her eyes calculating. Briana asked questions between giggles and Kim found it hard to pay attention to her words, so the best resort was to nod to anything she said. She just hopped that the answers were all correct because no way was she going to explain that she couldn't understand what her little sister was saying, if she did change some of the responses to no.
'Settle down, let me finish'. Finally, they both quieted down and Kim let out a sigh of relief. The teenager continued. 'It's been passed down from generation to generation, from our ancestors to us. It's our turn to protect those who can't protect themselves'. She leaned in, making the twins do the same and whispered 'we can live for hundreds of years, even thousands'.
'Whoa', the younger sisters said in awe.
'Yup', she said. 'awesome isn't it'.
Brenda tilted her head slightly and narrowed her eyes. 'Are you really a teenager or did you lie to us when you're actually a hundred years old?'
Kim's eye twitched again. 'You little brat, I'm nineteen. I never lied about my age', she almost shouted.
The twins laughed and rolled around the ground at their sister's discomfort. It put a smile on her face, happy that they are taking everything in well.
'Ok, aside from that you must train', she said sternly. 'we're taken to certain schools which are best suited for us'.
Brenda crooked her head a little. 'How come we don't get to choose?'
'Because Brenda it's a rule. Sometimes the spirits have a say in the matter because their usual answer is that we're built differently. It's also because sometimes they tend to make us follow the direction our parents used to be in.
She nodded and crossed her hands on her lap. She was thinking if she should show then now or later until she let out a frustrated sigh and brought out her sword, displaying it before them. It was average length, black and dangerously sharp.
'We have special types of weapons with different abilities that work on the supernatural. This one is mine', she waved it in front of them. 'Her name is Usiku. They're called Kata Roho. Your spirit energy reaches a stage where it will materialise into a weapon and help draw out the full extent of your powers. They help us channel them better but after a while, if you get stronger there won't always be a need for them, most cases residing back inside you. Sometimes our energy frequency is too much for our bodies to bear, you'd have to release some of it frequently. We also have spirit animals that guide us on different paths'.
Briana looked like she wanted to say something. Kim shot her a suspicious look. 'Say Bleach one more time and I will--'
'Bleach', The brat even had a mischievous smile.
Kim whacked her head. She watched her strength, not wanting to accidentally crack her skull. The little girl let out a small shout of surprise, not believing her big sister hit her. Her expression was of mock betrayal.
'Anyway, like I said they're four schools. There are the hunters in the north, the craftsman in the west, the knights in the south and us, the guardians in the east. We train to fight anything that's evil... like monsters but also some bad guys who love to use dark magic and they get so absorbed into it, it corrupts their soul'.
She continued to explain about the types of enemies they encountered. The deadly spells that cause massive destruction. The consequences for taking a mission lightly and not being cautious enough. Kim noticed how they were getting scared. She felt like she told them enough and stopped. Soothing them as they whimpered.
'So scary', Brenda said.
Kim rubbed her hair. 'I know, but i promise I'll protect you two. Even if you don't need me. As long as I live, I won't let anything happen to my little angels.
They seemed to have calmed down at that. They both looked up to her in adoration. She had always protected them from a lot of things, took care of them when they were sick, always comforted them when they were afraid of the dark. The girls had so much faith in her it warmed Kim's heart.
Lights started to flicker rapidly.
