❧ "Hey, don't cry. Why are you crying?" ☙

Hugo reached down and wiped the tear off of the little boy's cheek. His clothes, his hair, him in general...there was something about him that attracted Hugo, stopping him from backing off.

Because normally, he would ignore the beggars on the street.

He wouldn't spare them a glance, like his mother, like his sister.

But he knew, in his heart, that the boy in front of him was no beggar. He was just sitting in a corner of a shop on the street, crying.

Hugo handed the boy his umbrella, and when he didn't take it, he crouched down next to the boy and stared into his eyes.

Hurt, jealousy, and helplessness reflected back.

Hugo put his hand into his jacket pocket, searching for something. Finally, he seemed to find it as he took his hand out, along with the little something, and put it in the boy's hand.

A ten dollar bill, folded into an origami stork.

"This is all I have now," Hugo told him, putting his arm around the shaking little one's shoulders. "But I will give you more."

The boy shook his head.

Hugo smiled. "It's fine, really. I may not be rich, but I will give you money. Because you need it more than me. " He took off his jacket, not caring how cold the weather was, and draped it around the boy. "You don't have to return this to me either. Keep it. Keep the money, and the jacket. In return, I would just like to know your name."

When the boy didn't reply, Hugo sighed and said, "Nevermind, it's okay. I have to go now, but I'll come back tomorrow!"

He waved to the boy and ran down the street, the rain soaking him, but he didn't care.

That little boy was someone who touched his heart.
