Girls & boys alike wear herringbone chains
And guys think they’ll attract more women in sagging pants and grills
And dance is the only free expression which can unite or divide
And kid size shoes amass on power lines
Where high school students are thought to riot on hour lunch breaks
And police brutality is the ONLY acceptable way to deal with our youth
Because where I’m from our bodies are only valued in our own neighborhoods
And EVERY male is a victim of “gang” violence
Although he’s never met a gang member in his life
Where I’m from neighbors unite against killers of children and deliberate erasure of childhood
But I don’t expect everyone to understand where I’m from or why the stakes are so high
