he can't say that he isn't relieved when thanksgiving break ends, and when he walks into school monday morning, the rush of normalcy from the school makes him relax.

it changes when he goes into first period calculus and sees the chromebooks on the desks.

"in case you haven't decided yet," mr. spinner smiles, "we will be taking the state career quiz to determine the type of jobs you may be good at, and the colleges for you depending on your grades. now—"

"excuse me," he interrupts, heart beating out of his chest. "i need to use the restroom."

the class bubbles with laughter, but he can't join in.

mr. spinner isn't smiling anymore. "is it an absolute emergency, mr. porter?"

"yes," he gathers up his books, hands shaking.

"okay. you may leave."

he stands up and rushes out the door.
