Chapter 8: Detention

“Furthermore,” Principal Evans sneered, “Mr. Mendler and Miss Hastings will be under constant administrative supervision.”

My jaw dropped. “But Prin-”

“No buts, we have revised both of your schedules for the time being, you both have the same exact classes.”

Scott evidently winced.

“Principal Evans,” Ryker started, “Please be more realistic, changing both of the student’s schedules? This is a little too-”

“We have a zero tolerance policy for ditching school Mr. Ryder,” Principal Evans shot back sharply. “Their original class schedules shall be restored by second semester if and only if they have no unexcused absences.”

I slumped deeper into my chair and rubbed my temples in frustration, an entire semester with Scott in every single one of my classes? Completely absurd!

Ryker threw me a stern look and I sat up straighter.

“They shall have detention everyday after school for a month as well.”

I have to see the traitor after school too? Great.

Ryker frowned. “Principal Evans, Teegan has plan-”

She cut him off with a glare. “Miss Hastings has violated a school rule and now must suffer the consequences. I have told you once and I’ll tell you again Mr. Ryder, Teegan will receive no special treatment here at Brookstone. I also suggest bringing her parents next time, I find it inappropriate speaking to her manager instead of a legal parent or guardian.”

Scott began to snicker as Ryker rolled his eyes at Evans.

The Principal frowned, “Speaking of legal parents and guardians, Mr. Mendler, why is it that neither one of your parents are here with us today? I sent them an email yesterday regarding this.”

Scott put on his most innocent expression and shrugged. “I don’t know Principal Evans, I thought they were coming. I guess they didn’t receive the memo.”

I rolled my eyes, what bull. 

“Pity,” Principal Evans sighed, “You’re such a good student Scott, you truly are.”

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

“But you have gotten in trouble once too many here.”

Scott frowned.

She pursed her lips, “But you’re one of our best students so I have decided against putting this in your permanent record Mr. Mendler.”

Scott began to pale.

“Please be aware though” Principal Evans continued, “That anymore trouble, regardless of how big or small, will result in an immediate expulsion from Brookstone as well as terminated financial aide.” 

I gaped, Scott was under financial aide?

Scott stiffened, his jaw hardening as his eyes blazed with a mix of anger and embarrassment. 

“I understand,” he muttered coldly before walking out the door. “I won’t give Brookstone anymore trouble.”

For some strange reason, I followed him outside.

“Scott!” I called, trying to catch up to the angry boy. “Scott! Wait!”

“What do you want?” He viciously demanded, swiveling around on his heels and jabbing a finger in my face. “Are you here to make fun of me? Yeah big shot Varsity Captain isn’t as wealthy as everyone thinks he is, he needs fricken financial aide to attend Brookstone oh boo hoo hoo. Just lay off.”
