Chapter 12:
I was filled with worry as I realized that my brother hadn't come back yet. All of his men were gathered around him as he poured his heart out. Whoever Anne was, he must have really loved her. I realized we would be here a while so I struck up I conversation with Douglas.
"So who was Anne?" I asked nonchalantly.
"I can't tell you. Edward will tell you when he feels ready." Douglas said. "Anyways I have a question for you."
"What is it?" I asked.
"I heard about you being betrothed to Louis." He said.
"Yes, and? Get to the point." I said.
"Well, do you love him?" Douglas asked curiously.
"Do I what?" I asked confused as if I didn't know where I even was.
"I asked if you love Louis." Douglas questioned me.
"I- I've never been around him enough to even know if I love him. Or if I could even have feelings for him." I replied truthfully.
"Well, do you think you could ever love me?" He asked while he grasped my hand. It sent chills down my spine. Not like when you or cold or scared, but the tingly kind that send butterflies to your stomach.
"Uh- Um..." I stuttered, because I was in utter shock. Maybe I should think about this. My head was spinning and everything was in a blur.
"Just think about it." Douglas whispered in my ear. His warm breath made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Then he walked away towards the group of men.
"What was that all about!" Louis said after he stomped over to me. He was obviously irritated about something.
"What did I do to irritate you now your highness." I retorted.
"Excuse me, that is no way to treat your future husband." Louis stated.
"I didn't do anything. I promise Louis." I said.
"That is what you always say. I'm innocent Louis, I didn't do anything. Blah, Blah, Blah. Well I'm fed up with it! You need to clean up your act! I'm not going to marry some whore who has slept around with every single man in my battalion. And to top that off Leonardo says that he loves you! He just wants to take you from me!!!" Louis ranted.
"Louis I'm sorry... I never wanted to cause any of this. It's just that I don't love you." I said.
"You what!" Louis yelled as his voice filled with anger.
"I don't love you Louis, I never did." I replied calmly.
"Why I should have just left you on the side of the road while I had the chance! You are worthless. Your just some ungrateful little girl. You don't even know what I'm risking to try to be with you." He yelled.
"Louis, don't yell your drawing attention." I whispered. "I'- I'm sorry."
"You sorry- Ha!" He spat.
"I could try to learn to love you. I promise I will try." I spoke as my whole body trembled with fright, I'll admit that I was terrified of Louis, but I was sure that he wouldn't hurt me.
“Those are just words, you don’t really mean it.” Louis said and then he stomped of towards the rest of the men.
