Doctor of The Dead

Warren was talking to Citizen Z while I stayed by Cass, her leg has gotten so much worse and she knows she doesn't have much time. It's killing 10k to see her like this because I know he likes her. I look at Cass and I told her a secret that she should know if she does die. "His name is Thomas" I whispered in her ear. She looked up at me and smiled and started to fall asleep again
"Not sure how much longer we can hold it together." Warren said to C Z
"It's only another 150 miles."
"We have a man down, Cassandra. She's not looking good. And then there's the package." Warren said
"Uh, what about the package?"
"Don't know exactly, but Murphy's acting weird. More than usual. Where's this new destination?"
"It's Fort Collins, Colorado."
"What happened to California?"
"Lab's dark again. Maybe for good. You've been redeployed."
"By whose orders?" asked Warren
"Well I started picking up a teletype signal on the old civil defense frequency. At first I thought it was a hacker, but turns out it's Doctor Merch. Yeah, that Doctor Merch. The one who injected Murphy. So delivery Murphy to Fort Collins. Doctor Merch will be there with her team to meet you." said Citizen Z
"No more California?"
"Colorado is the new California."
Warren got off the radio and went back to the van, "How's she doing?"
"She's sleeping now but her leg is a lot more worse but I'm gonna help her for as long as I can." I said to Warren.
"How much gas do we have left?" Warren asked.
"I dunno, half a tank or so." said Doc
"Make it 150 miles?"
"Well if it's mostly downhill."
"We're real low on ammo too." said 10k
Warren went up to Murphy. "We found a taker."
"For what?"
"For you."
"What about California?"
"New orders. We are headed to a lab in Fort Collins."
"Fort Collins? What the hell is in Fort Collins?"
"Dr. Merch is there waiting for you."
"Doctor Merch? Yeah, I got a bone to pick with that bitch."
"That bitch is the reason you're still alive."
"Define alive."
"Well, Murphy. I think I'm gonna miss your sorry ass." said Doc
"I appreciate the sentiment."
"We logged some miles together, brother." said Doc
"Amen."
"Starting to feel like a damn family." Murphy said looking at me.
"I know how you feel about her, almost like she were your own kid. I feel the same way" said Doc looking at me and Cass sleeping.
"I mean, hell, once we deliver you, all bets are off. They're gonna have more needles stuck in you than the damn tomato in grandma's sewing basket. Oh, trust me, they're gonna have some kind of tube or prod rammed in every spare orifice, or my name ain't Sally. You know this one time I had a catheter. Dude, you better hope they don't go that route."
"Doc." Warren said
"What?"
"How much further?"
"Uh, I dunno, 65 miles or so. Anyway, I'm gonna miss you, dude. How 'bout you, kid? What do you got planned?"
"Uh, I don't know." 10k said holding me and looking at me as I sleep. " Still got 6,998 to go. Might take a break for a while though, head up north somewhere cold. The Zs don't fare too well in the cold.
But Autumn doesn't fare too well in the cold either. So I guess wherever the road takes us."
"Roberta?" asked Doc
"Uh, I don't know. Maybe follow the sun west. I've never been to California. How 'bout you, Doc?" Warren asked.
"Maybe I'll buy a boat and sail around the world. Find me an island where there's not even a Z in their alphabet."
"This must be it." 10k shook me awake and told me we were here.
"Citizen Z said look for a metal shed with a roll up door." said Warren
"What are all theZ's  looking at?"
"Our entrance."
"You think we're in the right place? Looks small." Said Murphy
"Let me see your hands." said Warren
"What? My hands, why? Is this a hygiene thing again?" said Murphy
"Just let me see them." Murphy gave him her hands and she put cuffs on him.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"They're looking for a group of civilians transporting a prisoner. I don't want anyone mistaking you as a zombie." said Warren
"Bullshit. You don't trust me. After all the times I've saved your ass." said Murphy
"Trust has got nothing to do with it. I don't want anyone piking you after we got you this far. Let's just get this over with." said Murphy. Murphy got out of the van and closed the door which lead the Z's to look at us.
"Hey! Murphy!" Doc yelled.
"How much ammo do we got?"
"Two bullets." I said
"I got one."
"Murphy!" Warren yelled.
"Hold your pants on. Follow me." he said as he opened the door.
"How do you know?" asked Warren
"Because it worked with me." I said
"Group hug."
"What?"
" Just do it! You want to live or not? Maybe someday you'll learn to trust me. Man, I hope nobody sees us." said Doc.
"You know before the apocalypse, I had the same effect on the ladies." said Murphy.
"10k you got Cass right."
"Sure doesn't look operational."
"All those zombies up there must've wanted something down here." I Said as we closed the door behind us
"Same  thing they always want.Brains." Said 10k
"No, Something different. Something inside is attracting them like a magnet.I can feel it." Said Murphy
"Puppies and kittens." I Said when I saw some Z's.
"Here they come." Warren yelled
"Come on, let's take cover." I Said to Cass
As they got the rest of the Z's I start hearing something.
"What is that?" I Asked as 10k was picking up Cass.
"It sounds like a phone." Said Warren
"Over here." I came to a desk and saw a dead man and his phone.
"Looks like he was texting his wife or somebody when it went down." I Said as I started to read them off.
"Something happened at the lab today. Can't talk now. I'll call you later. Won't be home till late, not telling us why. Putting us under quarantine. Will update when I know anything. Starting to get scared, something very wrong. Something infecting us.We might not get out of here.Tell the kids I love them."
"Wait! This is a new message here from Citizen Z. Operation Bite Mark. If you get this message, please respond. Hacked and searching lab mainframe. Discovered files you should be aware of. Really weird stuff.Find working computer." I Said
Murphy pushed the dead body of the desk and looked at me.
"Search HZN1 test results backslash backslash code name level nine. Password, red death."
"What was the passcode?" Asked Murphy
" Red death."
"Catchy." Said Doc
"Not surprising they were doing animal testing. Yeah, but what were they testing? Look at the date on these videos. It's the year before anybody was infected. How did they know to be working on a vaccine before anybody was infected." Said Murphy. He clicked on the video and it showed Dr. Merch asking this doctor a lot of questions about him getting infected..
They video went dark and showed everyone turning.
"Okay, who's for getting out of here right now Show of hands." Said Doc. I raised my hand.
"Okay. It's back out to the apocalypse it is." Doc said grabbing me.
"Nobody's going anywhere. This is not a goddamn democracy. We came here to find Doctor Merch, and that is exactly what we are going to do." Said Murphy
"He's right. If she's down here, we just can't leave her. She is still our only chance at a vaccine." Said Warren
"I just thought we might want to, I dunno, live." Said Doc
"Yeah, well quit your dreaming and let's go." Said Murphy.
We started walking and got into this room when the phone rang.
"Zombie apocalypse, how may I direct your call?" Said Doc
"Operation Bite Mark?"
" Uh, yeah, what's left of us. This is Doc speaking".
"Excellent. Are you all still together?"
"Correctomundo.Nice to hear your voice. So what fresh hell awaits us?" Asked Doc
"According to the operations manual I've hacked into, you're going to need to go through decontamination."
"Well that sounds great to me cuz I ain't had a decent shower since, let's see, New York."
"Well it's not exactly a shower. But here's the most important thing. It is imperative that you decontaminate again before going back to the surface. This lab is equipped with Def con One level quarantine assurance."
"Def con One? Well isn't that some kind of nuclear term?"
" In the event of the breach of the quarantine system, the lab is targeted to be incinerated by a tactical nuclear weapon."
"What am I not surprised?"
"And there's one other thing about the decontamination process you need to know."
"Yeah, what's that?"
" Naked?"
"That's what he said. And then we got to put all our clothes and stuff in this chute here to get decontaminated with some liquid nitrogen."
"So what are we waiting for?" Asked Murphy
"For y'all to turn around. And no peeking." Said Warren.
I helped Cass undress and we threw our close in .
"Cassandra, you okay?" I Asked
" I feel like I'm gonna pass out."
"You hang in there. Doc, what now?" Asked Warren
"Oh, we got to put these on." As Doc handed us glasses. "And and then you got to hit that button marked decontamination in front of you, 10K."
"Are you ready?" Asked 10k
" Just do it." Said Warren
There was this bright light and then when it went of we all grabbed our clothes from the Shute. I help Cass get dressed and I started to help her walk.
"Man, I think I fried my gonads. I shoulda used sunscreen on my junk." Said Doc as we were walking down the hallway. When we walked a little more Cass collapsed.
"Hey Cass, You're okay."
"I don't think I can go much further."
"You hold on ok"
10k came up behind me. "I've got her. I'll carry her if I have to." He Said as he picked her up.
We kept walking until we reached double doors.
"Can you see anything?" I Asked
" Hold on, little too dark. There's some kind of emergency lights flashing." Said Warren
"Dude, it says quarantine. Can't we just believe them?" Said Doc
"What are you, high? We're infected already, remember? What is this place?" Asked Murphy
"This isn't a hospital. It's a goddamn hall of horrors." Said Doc
We saw some Z's ahead standing around something.
"Murphy. Go talk to them. Do do that thing you do." Warren said. Murphy went up to do his thing when the Z's started acting up.
"Guys. These aren't regular zombies. They're some kind of mutant thing. I don't think they like me!" Murphy yelled as the tried to attack him. I grabbed my gun and shot the two of them in the head.
"Let's go find Merch." Said Murphy
"What's he gonna do when he catches up to Merch?" I Asked Doc
" I dunno, but I'm glad I'm not her. Be ready for anything." Said Doc
"Let's go." Yelled Murphy.
"I can't do it." Said Cass. I turn and look at her and said, "Hey don't say that."
"I can carry you. You're gonna be okay." Said 10k
"I'm gonna get us all killed. Please, Tommy." Cass whispered to him
"Okay. Just don't tell anybody my name, all right?" "I won't." Cass Said as he passed out
"Hey. Is she?" Warren Asked.
" She's still alive." I Said
We found a room with a cot in it and laid her down.
"You can stay here and get some rest. And we'll come back for you." I Said holding her hand
I went out of the room and Murphy looked at the tears in my eyes.
"Is she gonna make it?" He Asked
" You might want to say your goodbyes." 
Murphy went in for 5 minutes and came out.
"Let's go." He Said
We walked until 10k found something.
"Check this out. This trail of gore leads to here. Biocontainment."
"Could this place get any creepier?" Said Doc
We walked in the lab and there was a person half burned on the table.
"Oh my God. It's alive." Said Murphy
"Is that Doctor Merch?" I Asked
"No. Somebody else. It's the lab tech in the video.
He wants us to watch something." Said Murphy as he played the video.
"Why are you doing this to me? It's for your own good, Brendon."
"You've started to react to the virus."
"Don't give me that shit you've been giving the monkeys. I've seen the side effects. We can't take the chance the virus has jumped to humans. You'll be the first human trial of the vaccine. We can't wait any longer. What's gonna happen to me? We don't know. Hold him down. Hold him down! Hold him still.And turn off that camera.The screen went dark and I looked at the guy.
"The vaccine must have worked. Kept him from turning zombie. But it won't let him die. Did Merch do this to you?" I Asked
He started to try to talk. "Guys! He's trying to say something."
"Kill me. Kill me. Kill me. Kill me." He repeated
"We're getting the hell out of here." Doc Said
The lab doors opened and 2 soldiers and a doctor came in.
"I'm Doctor Kurtz. I'm here to help you save mankind." He said. "I've gone to a great deal of effort to find you, Mr. Murphy. I've been on a little road trip. Well your journey ends here. You're safe now. And your friends are to be commended for their bravery and commitment. Your country, all mankind, owes you a great deal."
"What's going to happen to him?" I Asked
"Well we'll take him the rest of the way to the lab in California where we'll sequence his genes and clone the antibodies in his blood. Then with any luck, we'll be able to recreate the vaccine that's keeping him alive." He Said.
"Redacted my ass. What if I don't want to be your guinea pig? Well then you'll eventually wind up just like Brendon Doyle, Patient Zero over there.
Speaking of which, someone should really give that poor creature mercy."
"I'll do it. I'm sorry. I'm sorry about all of it." Murphy said as he mercy him. He noticed the screen flashing saying. "Don't trust him. Don't trust him."
"I'm not going." Said Murphy as he pulled me closer
"Murphy. This is why we came this far." I Said but I looked at the screen that was flashing and saw what it said.
"Explain to me again why I should believe anything you say." He Said
"Let's start with you have no choice." Said Kurtz
"He's just nervous. Right, Murphy? He's actually very civic minded." Said Doc
"Really, this is so unnecessary. No one is going to harm you Mr Murphy" Kurtz Said as he got closer.
"Quite the opposite." He Said
There was a knock at the door as it was opening
"Just a zombie. Give it mercy so it won't attract more." Said Kurtz
"Zombies can't open doors, can they?"
What came through the door was Cass.
"Don't shoot!" I yelled
"She's a zombie. Mercy her."
"I'm not dead." Said Cass as she attacked them. One of the guys fired there gun and shot Doc in the stomach. I ran to the ground screaming and holding him. I look up and saw Murphy started running out the door!
"Doc! Doc. Doc. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Look at me. Look at me." I Said as Warren and 10k came over
An alarm started going off saying, "Fail safe activated.Seven minutes to detonation."
I looked at 10k and Warren
"Come on, Doc. Come on, Doc." I Said as we ran to the exit to our van.
"Six minutes to detonation.".
"Come on. Come on." Warren yelled. We got into the elevator that leads us up.
"Four minutes to detonation."
I grabbed  the door and we ran outside.
"Look. What is it?" I Said as a noticed something on the ground.
" Is that all that's left of Murphy?" I Asked
" It's his skin. He shed his skin." Said 10k
"Where's Murphy? Where's the van? Murphy." I yelled
"Come on, let's take this." Warren yells as we all got into the black suv and started driving me off as fast as we can.
I looked up in the sky and saw the missile heading towards the lab.
God, I hate the apocalypse.
