IV

When Christina and Uriah get inside the classroom I tell them everything about me and Four's 'friendly' conversation. They're the only people that know about my parents. The only people that know why I'm 'distant'.

Once the bell went, everything was silent. Too silent. The type of silence that could easily slit your throat. The type of silence that drowns you in depressing thoughts, only to be helped by noise. Sometimes quiet is violent. After more violent silence, the door creaks open to reveal faces that are too familiar for comfort.

Max, Jeanine, Eric and Amar. Or as everyone else knows them as Coach Jones, Ms Matthews, Coach Coulter and Coach Ray. "Prior, Pedrad, Waters?" Coach Ray asks me.
"Coach Ray?" I start "Hey!" And soon enough I'm engulfed into a large hug by my soccer coach. By the time I pulled out of the hug, everyone else, except Coach Jones and Coach Coulter were beyond shocked until Chris said rather bluntly, "We're on his soccer team.".

"She's smart, hot and sporty? Damn."  A long discussion about Chris, Uri and I playing soccer, while me and Jeanine had a long staring competition, which I won because, if anyone knows how to stare, it's me. "Quiet initiates!" Typical Eric. Trying to make himself the more important situation.

How do I know Eric? Well, he dated Sky, my ex best friend, and me being the caring person I was, told her to stop dating that 'human pincushion with baby mama drama and alimony'. I was a strange sophomore. But I wasn't wrong. She was a sophomore and he was in college. Fucking college. Scumbag.

Once all the conversation died down, Max or Coach Jones piped up and started his really long speech. "Welcome to dauntless, initiates. In dauntless, we value bravery over anything else and we must demonstrate overcoming fear in anyway possible. You will demonstrate your bravery doing sports..." and then I zoned out. I've found it hard to concentrate and it's even harder when the coach that threatened to kill you is speaking to you. Well, not me directly.

"...you will get cut from dauntless and be placed in the factionless school. Questions?" What? Cuts? I'm not bad at sports, but the people around me are way better, excluding Myra. No offence to her or anything but she probably thinks the sport squash is some British drink.

I look over at Christina and Uriah, who are grinning bigger than humanly possible.

God, am I surrounded by strange but loveable freaks.
