The recap of the last chapter:
Jon Arryn questioned Dawn about the random slaughter happening in the capital, Petyr Baelish finds the opportunity to put her on the spot by bringing up the book Dawn has been reading of Mitharros in order to find out more about her but failed by Arryn focusing on something else. A drunk Robert Baratheon threatens Dawn with quote "I'll have you banned from this damn city if you dare lie to my face, I could have your head on a pike for treason" and after the accusation Dawn becomes aware of who Cersei might really just be after sitting in silence instead of defending, which led Dawn and Cersei to meet the same night only to have their first big argument, causing Dawn Vyndelle to storm off in disappointment.
CHAPTER TWELVE
The harsh rain was showering the capital, it was loud and violent over the roof and though the Inn was not near the sea you could still hear the crashing waves in the distance as if it demanded our attention – the cities attention. It was the warm rain of nightfall that grew the scent of grass and familiar dirt that I remember when I was young, an earth-like smell I oddly loved, I have forgotten the smell of my childhood the time I've worked for House Lannister, it was a smell the wealthy would not understand except for the outlanders and travelers that did not mind a little mud when hunting. I knew I didn't leave King's Landing, the city was large but I could still view the highest tower of the keep as I viewed to my left window, the lightning lit the dark sky flashing the distant keep before it grew into the shadows of the night in a blink of an eye. As terrifying and dangerous the night was, the Inn gave no such feeling, it was a safe dim room, glowing flickering faces of men and women sitting from the warmth of the large fire that sat in the middle, deep in a hole but the flames danced tall and gracefully. I reached into my pockets and pulled out the claw Nicholas gave me and read the words to myself again.
"In Darkness, there is light."
I shouldn't have been as surprised after finding these words carved into this claw, it wasn't much but it was something to help me find out who Nicholas was, I might've known him as a father growing up, this only showed that he did care, though he wasn't much on showing me, he knew all along I was not just an ordinary girl from a poor family. As I sat there feeling the texture of the fragile and old claw on the tip of my fingers, feeling of my thoughts drowning me to wonder, a sudden song began to play at the distance, the same song I remembered listening by a Lannister soldier, only there were no words just a mellow and slow melody, it gave a much eerie sound to it with the rain gently beating on the wooden roof above us. I was curious about it, the song seemed to be well liked in King's Landing "A Lion still has claws..." the man across from me sang under his breath, taking a drink from his cup.
