~Beth's POV~
I felt someone violently grab my shoulder and awaken me. "Daryl, stop it," I croaked out groggily.
"Uuuugh," I heard a groan and I knew it didn't come from Daryl. My eyes flew open. Much to my dismay I was greeted with a open mouth filled of yellow, rotting teeth. Ready to take a bite of my flesh, the walker leaned in for the kill. I swung my fist as hard as I could right into the jaw of the walker. The impact hurt like hell, but I heard a satisfying crack and the walker's jaw was so dislocated there was no way he could take a bite out of me. With a hard push I shoved it to the ground. I grabbed my knife that was in my boot and raised my hand, fully prepared to stab the brain. That's when a shuffling sound came from behind me. Not a moment too soon, I spun around and stabbed the female walker who had been stalking me. I easily retracted my knife from the skull and went to finish the other walker off.
Soon more and more walkers poured into the room like rats in sewers. I frantically stabbed and sliced at the dead beings that were now surrounding me from all sides. Frantically pushing through the herd, I made my way to the back room. The back door was completely destroyed and more walkers came through it every second. Our cabin was now completely overrun and it was too late to fix the door. That's when I remembered. Where was Daryl?
"Daryl?" I yelled out to him. Only the sounds of the walkers answered my call. I knew I couldn't stay in the cabin for even a moment longer. He can take care of himself, I reassured my mind. He probably already made it outside. Using all the energy I had left, I barreled through the walkers and out the door.
When I saw the outside, I took a sharp breath in. It's not that I expected a walker free zone. I just didn't expect the whole herd plus more right outside my fucking door step. I was still weak and fighting through all the walkers made me even more exhausted. If I had been at the top of my game, I still didn't think I could survive this. "Well," I grumbled, "I am so screwed."
"Not yet you're not," a gruff voice said from behind me.
"Daryl! Holy shit! Where were you?"
"We will talk later. Get up that tree!" he exclaimed, pointing to an awfully tall pine tree about 30 feet away. Daryl broke into a sprint and pulled me along with him. We made it about halfway to the tree when Daryl had pull out his crossbow and clear a path. He probably killed more than ten walkers, but it didn't seem to make difference.
We just kept pushing on through. We were squished shoulder to shoulder against the walkers. I don't think even a centimeter of ground wasn't covered by one of those pieces of filth. Eventually, we made it to the base of the tree. This first branch was thick enough to support my weight, but it was just out of my reach. With out a word Daryl wrapped his hands around my waist and lifted me up. If my heart wasn't beating fast before, it sure was now. I grabbed the branch and hoisted myself up. Daryl threw his bow up to me and I slung it over my shoulder.
I climbed up to the next branch to give Daryl room to get up on the original branch. However, a particular walker was giving him a hard time and I had his crossbow. He was defenseless. Just like I had seen Daryl do all so many times before, I put the arrow in place and shot. It landed perfectly in the brain of the walker. I heard Daryl mutter a thanks under his breath then jump up to join me in the tree. He motioned me to climb higher, so I did. Together we crawled up the tree until we reached a point where the branches were almost to thin to stand on. "Why did we climb so high? We were out of reach even on the first branch," I complained.
"They will move on from the tree since we are so high up we are unnoticeable. If we keep our voices low they won't even hear us," he explained impatiently.
"Make sense. Plus we now have a vantage point," I added.
"Yeah. What a great view of walkers for miles," Daryl said looking into the horizon.
"At least we are safe for now," I said, trying to make the situation less tense. Daryl just continued to scowl and didn't respond. I could tell something was seriously bothering him, and it wasn't the fact we were stuck in a tree in the middle of a herd. "Daryl," I whispered about to ask him what was bothering him so much.
"What?" he replied shortly.
"Never mind," I mumbled looking down. He was trying to push me away again. Why would he do that to me? Right now I needed him. I wanted to cry, but I didn't. He won't be allowed to see my weakness if I can't see his.
"So what now?" I asked with an obvious edge to my voice. He seemed to notice my annoyance with him and his eyes widened.
"We wait," Daryl stated simply. I was afraid that would be his answer.
In a drowning silence, we sat until the sun had set. Soon I could barely even see the outline of Daryl. I wondered if he was asleep, but I assumed not by his breathing. The darkness and only the moans of the walkers kept me company. Daryl just remained quiet. Why couldn't he just say something? Just one word from him would calm me.
Finally, I just couldn't take it anymore.
