"12 Billion. Thats the amount of cells I can regenerate each second," I answered Angie as we continued our ascent up the volcano. If she was impressed she didn't show it. Any other day she would have been but today was different. She was distracted and barely noticed when I spoke to her.
It was now April 5th. One and a half months had passed and still I found not a single trace of Kiun. I scoured the better part of Malta looking for Alien life. I didn't have to look for long. They found me. Lots of them. It turned out that Mr.Spirit had been right about Aliens trying to kill me to get a chance to be guardians themselves.
Spring had barely woken from it's slumber and yet the air was boiling hot, and it only got hotter as we climbed higher. 'That's strange' I thought to myself, 'Mount Etna is usually Ice capped at this time of year.' Just then, a loud rumble roared from the distance and then a tremor, as if Etna herself was angry. Things definitely weren't right.
Angie still hadn't explained to me why we were even here. She had phoned me up just after school and asked me to help her with something at Mount Etna. She said it was important and that she would explain later but then simply sat quietly through the entire flight to Sicily with a worried look. So worried in fact that she was pale, even in the unbearable heat. Even my lame excuses to make small talk didn't help.
She glanced down towards some construction work at a village below us. We had parked Oasis there earlier as it was close. A little too close to an active volcano if you asked me. Her face revealed little but I suspect she was worried about them. What ever the reason was for us being here, I suspected it had something to do with those tremors. And if the volcano did erupt, there was little time to evacuate an entire village.
Another rumble like a thunder clap followed by a quake. This one almost shook me off my feet.
"We have to hurry!", Angie urged me.
I nodded in agreement.
We rushed up the side of the volcano. The hike was a lot longer than I imagined from the pictures of Etna I've seen and I kept slipping on the loose rocks. Angie on the other hand was as sure footed as a mountain goat. It was definitely a work out. I wonder if stuff like that was part of her training regiment. If I did that for a month, I'd certainly be as fit as any Olympian.
Keeping us protected from the heat also took it's toll on me. Of course few things could actually harm me but Angie is still human. It was a trick I had accidentally discovered when I healed a pigeon that broke it's wing flying into my invisible spaceship. At the time I just thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice if I could regenerate other's cells not just my own?'. It worked. I could keep replacing Angie's damaged cells with ones of less energy as long I remain focused on the task at hand.
Maybe I focused a little too much on the task because before I knew it, we had reached the caldera and I almost walked into the crater. I'm pretty sure I could survive lava but the pain would have been unimaginable. Luckily for me, Angie had pulled me behind a rock near the edge.
She was fixated on something I couldn't quiet see. I noticed that the ground was shaking rhythmically, in slow pulses, almost like a jackhammer. Then they stopped.
Angie gestured to me to get closer. I crawled my way to the ledge and peered downwards. At first I didn't know what I was looking for but she pointed towards a large shape that was moving. About 50 metres down was a chilling sight.
Chilling haha, chilling in a volcano!? Sorry, I'll see myself out.
Sitting right below us, with it's face in a hole was a creature resembling a giant salamander. Even by alien standards this creature was misshapen. It had a very long body, the length of a limousine, but it seemed to drag it's rear behind itself as it only possessed fore limbs. It's skin definitely looked as if it had been dragged across the flour. The shaggy, blueish-grey fur which covered the greater part of it's body, resembled a rag that's been torn violently apart and then stitched back again. Some lines of ribs were even visible along with pipes along it's sides like the breathing tubes of insects. What really upset my stomach though was it's long, rat-like tail, disgustingly covered by patches of scales with the rest bare pale skin.
