"For life and death are one,
Even as the river and the sea
Are one"
       Khalil Gibran

I smiled at the quote mom sent me. I'm such a sucker for the ocean. I sighed. Lunch time. Thank Poseidon. I died down the weather and now the sun was out, with a few clouds here and there. I sat down next to a tree, away from the building. I took out the sandwich that would contain my pill. I internally shuddered. I made sure to put extra ham in this one, but I could still slightly taste it. My phone vibrated, signaling I had gotten a call. It was Cass. Shit. "Hello?" "What happened?" "What are you-" "Something happened at school, didn't it." I sighed. Can't hide it now. "Cass, I'm fine. Don't worry. Just a little project gone wrong. The fact that I'm talking to you right now proves that." "I know you changed the weather. You only do that when you're stressed or very emotional. Tell me what happened. Now." His big brother tone had kicked in. "Fine. Just don't tell Mom and dad." I described the accident, but left out the part that it was Camdon's fault and just said I was taken to the nurses office.

"Serena, you have to be more careful." I cringed. He only used that name when he's really emotional. I could hear the hurt laced in his voice. "Cass, I'm-" "Who are you talking to?" I jumped. Camdon. "I'll call you back. I need to talk to a nurse. Later." I quickly hung up. I'd call him back later. "Haven't you already done enough of a first impression?," I coldly said. "About that. I'd like to make up for what I've done." "How? By exposing me to the school? Hm?" His face remained stern. "My friends invited me to mixer and I don't want to meet another girl. Come with me." I laughed distastefully. "You want me to do you a favor when it should be the other way around? You're nuts, buddy."

He suddenly bent down and leaned in close. "Why do you insist on playing this game?," his soft voice pondered. "I have no idea what you're talking about." I stood up and grabbed my backpack. "Leave me alone if you don't want to be electrocuted."

History. The final class of the day. Turns out Camdon is in every single one of my classes, except this one. "Who can describe the story of Jedrek for the class?," the teacher asked. I raised my hand. This was too easy. "Alright Serenity. Go ahead."

"It is a very old story that has been shared throughout our country . There once was a knight named Jedrek, who served king Ian and queen Teresa. He was famous for bringing in the most fearsome bandits and criminals. He was a precious friend of the king's, and was very loyal. One day, the king told Jedrek to take the day off, to enjoy what the kingdom had to offer and learn the meaning of life. Soon after he had left the castle walls, he wandered around the city, enjoying his day off. But his day of meaning did not last long. A message had spread across that the king had been murdered. And the weapon: Jedrek's sword. There was a bounty on his head: a lifetime of gold and riches for him, dead or alive. Jedrek couldn't believe what he had heard. He went straight home to his wife with a child on the way. She screamed when he entered and called him a traitor. Then she slit open her stomach and throat before saying that he was a disgrace and had wished that she had never met him. After that moment, he became the Dark Knight Jedrek. His black hair turned a dark blue and his right eye turned red. His holy sword became a demon sword. It is currently kept in the lowest part of the castle, where it is heavily guarded and preserved. Even to this day, it is protected in case he comes to retrieve it, which has happened twice already."

The second time had occurred six years ago. Everyone was scared, but my family thought nothing of it. "It's not our fight. Let the humans figure out their own issues," dad had said. "Thank you. Now, this serves as a lesson that even the highest can easily be brought to the bottom." I zoned out as the memory of his return flooded my mind. His eyes seemed sad. "My sword!! My predecessor! He's needs my help!," I remember him saying. After two days of fighting, Jedrek retreated back to wherever he was. The school was hectic the next day, but I didn't care. The bell rang, signaling the end of the day. I grabbed my stuff and headed out. A person walked alongside me as I exited the school. "No." "I haven't even-" "I know you're going to try to convince me. No." Camdon sighed. "Come over." "Excuse me?" "Come over to my place." I could feel the hateful glares coming from other girls. "I'd rather not. I have..stuff to do." I need to take my pill in like twenty minutes too. He grabbed my hand and dragged me to a car that was parked out front. He unlocked the door and threw me in. He went around and got in. Starting the car, he quickly drove off. "Where are you taking me?!"

I shouldn't panic. Cass. I put on my poker face. "Take me home." "You seemed to have changed your take on the situation. Any particular reason?" We drove for another three minutes . My eyes widened. We were at a mansion. It was huge. He parked in front and dragged me up the stairs. Opening the door, we were greeted by dozens of servants. "Good afternoon, Mr.Westbay." He merely nodded his head and pulled me up another set of stairs, the down a long hallway. "Camdon, I wasn't expecting you this early." We stopped walking. "Hello dad." The tension laced in his voice caused me to become curious. "Who do you have here?" "She's just a transfer student. I owe her something." "Why don't you both come to my study." We followed Mr.Westbay further down the hall. I quickly took my pill while being dragged and silently gagged. We entered a huge study, and I grew horrified by what I saw. The study was full of dead mermaids.
