See, the problem with you
Is that you smother flames
With invasive hands
You expect them not to burn you
And obey your commands

It was petrifying. A mass of fears condensed into a livid scene , intertwining with reality like stitches in an open wound. The devil's vessel had icy blue eyes, and Dean was paralyzed in his smug gaze. With his arm was slung around Cas's neck, Cole held Dean's eyes. A casual gesture, yet Dean imagined it coiling around and strangling him, and he couldn't breathe. Unafraid, the villain hid in broad daylight, and worst of all, was Castiel. Completely oblivious of the wolf. Dean wanted to yell, but instead, he approached drearily, with an edgy stride.
"Hello, Dean." Cas smiled, stepping away from the arm, which slithered away like a hungry boa. Cole glared, a sick, sadistic glare that told Dean he knew exactly what he was doing.
"Hey, buddy." Dean grinned bitterly, positioning himself between the two. He could do this, he thought, he couldn't do much, but he could do this. Make distance, a barrier as weak as his crumbling conscience.
"Hey, Dean-o!" Cole beamed, giving him a nudge that wasn't the playful thing it appeared to be, but a show of dominance, control. He'd use Cas against him, he'd hurt Cas, no, he'd try to...He wasn't getting away with it.
"I was talking to Cas." Dean seethed, refusing to conform to the false play of friendliness.
"You two know each other?" Castiel queried next to Cole's toothy grin.
"Dean and I? We go way back. Isn't that right?"
Dean was seething in rage, and he could feel it burning through his eyes.
"Dean? What's wrong?" Castiel sensed , touching Dean's shoulder and catching his eyes. Momentarily, Dean felt his eyes soften.
"What's he told you?" Dean grumbled suddenly.
"Huh?"
"What's he told you?"
"...His name. He likes guns."
"Look, Cas..."
"You guys having some top secret meeting or something?" Cole grinned, shoving his way into the conversation. Dean wanted to kill him then, it didn't matter how many witnesses, it didn't matter if he went to jail... The urge to punch and rip and tear was a savage, vengeful thirst. He felt it when he pictured Jo, but today, Cole's arm was the invisible noose around Cas's neck, an absent but valid threat. The fear of loss outweighed the memories of it by a landslide.
"Look, Dean. I know we have our differences, but c'mon, man." He placed a hand on Dean's shoulder, and Dean shoved him off in disgust. When Jo died, it was Dean's fault. His burden. All those vengeful months, thinking maybe killing Cole would atone for his guilt. Like a reaper, his lips sentenced her to a slow, painful death. He'd tried killing him more than once, and had his ass kicked every time, each one progressively worse than the first. He could feel his inferiority in his bones, and hated himself for it.For everything. Cole was an angel after all, a fighter where Dean was a lover. Well, he couldn't even be that.
"You should leave." Castiel commented gravely, and Dean's lungs collapsed.
"Yeah, even Cas wants you to go." Cole seconded with a steady, cocky look to his eyes.
"I didn't mean Dean." Castiel clarified with an apparent sense of hostility, and the look on Cole's face was priceless.
"What!? He's the one throwing a hissy fit!" Cole's laughed, an aggressive, mauled sound.
"I said, you should leave." Castiel growled, staring him through the scope of a rifle. To Dean's surprise, Cole let it go with an obnoxious shrug and a turn of his heels. They were alone again.
"What did he do to you?" Castiel frowned at Dean. His eyebrows drew inwards in a certain sympathy."Not what he did to me...What he...He's a bad guy. I need you- I need you to trust me. Can you do that?" It was if he was begging, despite the casual illusion cast over his words. Cas seemed to understand, or accept anyway. It came in the form of a gentle nod.
