Ok, where do I begin?
Firstly, let me get this out of the way....
I HATE most overpowered characters. Not just OCs but plenty of canon characters that exist in their own media (not just Sonic characters either) .
See how I say most?
To me there are different kinds of Overpowered characters. Some that work and aren't annoying while some just...don't work with me and can annoy me or pretty much anyone easily.
An overpowered character is technically a character that can do just about anything or at least are very hard to overcome and take down in a battle or whatever.
Point is, an overpowered character can be kinda boring because you know they are strong and will take tons of effort to defeat but they usually are the victors, especially if the character is not written nicely with a set of flaws. So their victory is pretty much too predictable.I know this chapter is all over the place and isn't as clear as I want it to be, but I'm kind of in a rush today.
So I'm going to talk about a few things, which will only be touching the tip of the iceberg. Also I'll fix up anything here if needed, later. Some Overpowered OCs are actually borderline Mary sues, while others are closer to being more like regular OCs. Good OCs. What I mean by that is that a GOOD and even likable overpowered character has weaknesses, they act like normal OCs, and they're not complete jerks or Mary Sues. All characters should have flaws/weakness. It not only makes them more realistic but it makes them more relatable. Anyone who is "perfect" or lack very little to no flaws are not.
What doesn't make an overpowered character: a lot of information.
Yes, some overpowered characters have a lot of information but not every OC with lots of info are OP. I tend to write lots of info for my characters so they are fleshed out. Just because there is a lot of information does not mean the character is overpowered. Now, if the character is said to have tons of powers, faster then Sonic (for example). And is pretty much unbeatable along with tons of info, then that makes them OP. I hate hearing that mine are called OP. I try my hardest never to make them overpowered by limiting their powers and giving them flaws. Even if one of them are or become overpowered, I give them these flaws and weaknesses to make it more realistic and I try to make it make sense as to why they are OP. I try to even things out.
Why do I bring this up? To underline the difference between normal OCs with lots of info, and plain out OP characters with or without lots of info. Also I needed to rant about it. So don't be afraid to write down as much info as you like.So this is where I will end this off at and if anything else comes to mind, I will make a part two.
You're free to discuss OP characters in the comments if you'd like.
