Summer was Nathan's favorite season. Not just because school was out, not just because he got to see the family that lived far away, not just because of the warm weather or the pool parties. No. Summer was Nathan's favorite season because in the last couple days  of it, he got to host his friends at his family's house in the Hamptons. He'd get to see them every day at school. But that was different- it was school. Here in the Hamptons, there wasn't any homework or studying. There weren't responsibilities, and there wouldn't be for another five days.

"Nathan, some of your friends are here," said the pukwudgie, Grin. She hurried outside to greet them. Nathan spring up from his grandfather's old chair (it smelled like him, like vanilla pipe tobacco and pine scented soap.) He practically sprinted outside. The freshly cut grass crunched under his sneakers, but the sound was covered up by the sound of the car doors closing. Out came some of his friends - Ophelia Teagarden, Maelin Nguyen, and Adsanti Black. Grin tried to carry all of their heavy trunks. Ophelia took out her wand and levitated them out of Grin's small arms. "Guys!" Nathan yelled, and their attention was on him again. They all raced to hug him ( including Ophelia, who broke her concentration and dropped the trunks in her excitement.) "Mae, your hair," Nathan remarked, once everyone had broken apart.

Maelin had magicked her naturally jet-black hair a very pretty silver. She had wanted to do it for a while, but had decided not to because "asians just don't do that." Maelin flipped her ponytail around. "Ophelia did it for me while I was staying with her. I'm glad I finally had the guts to go ahead and do it!" She said. Ophelia, hearing her name, suddenly seemed to remember that her trunks were on the ground. She hurried over to them to pick them up. "I hope you're not allergic to cats," Adsanti said suddenly, and Maelin giggled. "Oh, no," Nathan said.

Two hours later, after their other  friends, Elena Rosales and Logan Silverstone, had arrived, their group was sitting on the floor of Nathan's room. Ophelia's new kitten, a tiny sphynx, was sitting in her lap while she absentmindedly stroked his hairless back. He was only a baby, Ophelia had explained, and he had been given up by a college student who couldn't keep him because of the pet policy at Miami university so Ophelia adopted him at the humane society near where she lived. His name  ( at the moment) was Smeagle, after the character from lord of the rings. Nathan was not exactly an animal person, but he had to admit that the tiny hairless creature was very adorable. He was a shy little thing, though, and hadn't left Ophelia's lap even once.

"Where are your parents? Are they gonna be ok with Smeagle?" Adsanti asked. Smeagle ( who was only about a month old and didn't understand that people were addressing him when saying his name) decided to venture out of Ophelia's lap and into Adsanti's. "They'll be fine with him. And they're on the beach at the moment with some of their  friends," Nathan said, secretly hoping that Smeagle would want to walk in his direction so Nathan could pet him.

"Doesn't your mom have a garden party to host tonight?" Logan asked, in his quiet voice. Nathan's mother,Emmanuella, , threw an end-of- summer party every year in their garden. It was always a very extravagant affair-Emmanuella loved to create beautiful displays with magic- and especially extravagant because Nathan's two older sisters, who attended Rionach Sayre university, would be there. "Yeah. I probably should've  said something before, that way Smeagle could've gotten dressed," Nathan joked. "What about us?" Elena asked. "Yeah, I need to find myself a silver sundress that matches my hair," Maelin said, pretending to be panicked. Logan laughed. It was a light, happy sound. "It's a white party," Nathan explained. His friends all blinked at him. "I think you could elaborate on that," Maelin suggested. "It means wear white," Nathan said. Smeagle mewed. "What does that mean?" Nathan asked. "It means duh!" Said everyone. They all said it the same time, which made them laugh at each other.

The party was stunning so far. Floating platters of food appeared when guests reached out for them. Fairy lights were strung elegantly around the courtyard. The glass pool house was aglow with floating lights and the pool was full of splashing children, with a pukwudgie acting as a life guard. . Nathan stepped over the grass, watching the scene unfold. His mother and sisters (Lailie and Aubrianna) all looked very beautiful in their white dresses, which made their dark hair and dark eyes stand out. His father had his arms around his mother's waist; they reminded Nathan of the prom kings and queens in the no-maj TV shows that Lailie had liked to watch as a teenager.
