"You said you would wait...
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
This wasn't happening, he told himself. It was all a dream. In a few moments, he would awaken, safe and sound in his girlfriend's arms.
He stopped dead in his tracks as reality hit him full force.
This was real.
"Alright, you're done sir. Try them out, they may be a little blurry at first."
He'd opened his eyes and was greeted by a dazzling array of colors, swirling around him, as if he was standing in a painting.
He wanted to shout with joy. Never would he have to guess at something's appearance. He could live a life like everyone else. He wouldn't ever be that person everyone stared at on the streets, the one tripping over everyone's feet (including his own) and walking around blindly in the completely wrong direction. And he could finally see his girlfriend. The mere thought excited him. To see the face behind that mask of pitch darkness, to finally see her after hearing only her melodic voice for his whole life, that was what he wanted to do most.
Wait.
Areum?
Where was she?
She should've tackled him in a hug by now, probably crying from joy.
"Sir? You know my girlfriend, the girl who came with me? Did you see where she went?"
"Ah, yes. I believe she left with your other friend, about a day after you arrived."
A day? That means she left...two days ago!
"Please, did she say where she was going?"
The doctor shook his head. "No, sorry, she didn't tell me. But she did say to tell you that when you woke up not to worry."
But worry he did. Questions flew around his head the entire sleepless night, wondering why Areum hadn't told him she'd be leaving.
A sudden thought occurred to him. Maybe she'd left him a message? He breathlessly grabbed his phone from the nightstand beside the lumpy hospital bed, holding a breath he didn't realize he was holding.
One unread message.
Hello Jungkook, this is Areum. Please don't worry about me, I'll be fine. How is it being able to see the world around you? Must be really nice, huh? Don't try to look for me, you won't be able to. Please, just keep living life, do it Jungkook, for me. This is the point of life where we must go our separate ways. Goodbye Jungkook. And please remember, I love you.
Kim Areum
His heart sunk, as he read the message again and again in disbelief. Why had she left him? His first thought was to call her, only to reach a robotic voice that informed him he had been blocked by 'this number.' Blocked? She'd blocked him?
Areum must really not want to see me...
He then attempted to call Taehyung, who was surely the 'other friend' the doctor had mentioned. There was no answer.
Surely Jimin would tell him then. No...
Exhausted from his efforts, he finally fell back onto the bed, and sobbing quietly, slipped into a restless sleep.
Days had passed, and there was still no sign of Areum, nor his friends. Every night, Jungkook would cry himself to sleep, wondering what he did that made Areum leave him.
Was I not good enough?
Am I not enough for you?
Questions that tortured the sanity out of him, until he no longer felt alive anymore. Each passing day felt like a nightmare, just another day for him to question himself, question why he was even alive. He missed her soothing presence, her sweet, melodic voice, her warm embrace.
Why Areum?
Why?
...why did you leave me?"
