His heart hammered in his chest, hands involuntarily twisting from anxiety. His eyes closed briefly, and he allowed one tear to sleep down his cheek and silently splatter onto the cold tiled floor, leaving a wet trail behind. Three days and sleepless nights. Slowly, he'd adjusted to the cold, empty feeling in his chest, a space reserved from Areum. On the outside he was cold and emotionless, a blank expression on his pale face. No one knew that inside, he was slowly breaking down, a little bit of himself dying with each passing day. Not even Taehyung and Jimin.
That had been one of the biggest shocks for Jungkook. They didn't even care anymore, not a single glance this way, and although they would occasionally spot Jungkook in the cafeteria, neither made an attempt to hold conversation, looking slightly guilty as they brushed passed him on their way to their usual lunch table. The table that once included Jungkook.
He sighed, and gingerly took a step into the school. Somewhere off in the distance, a piercing ringing signaled the start of first period, but he didn't care. Nothing mattered anymore.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" His eyes flew open to greet dark chocolate brown ones looking equally confused. The girl's cheeks flushed bright red, and she looked down, bangs blocking her sight.
"I'm so sorry!" she continued in a whisper, then turned and fled at once, glancing timidly back to look at Jungkook, who still stood frozen in shock.
His lids fluttered shut again, a soft smile spreading across his face as he pictured the small girl in his mind again.

Other than that small event days ago, however, his life continued per usual. Sleepless nights, tossing and turning in his bed late at night, wondering what he'd done to push Areum away. He thought back to just weeks ago, when they were still happy-and together.
"Jungkook! Let's go to the bakery!" She patiently led him across the busy intersection, chattering away excitedly about the new assortment of baked goods, but Jungkook paid her no heed. He was too busy thinking about how lucky he was to have someone as accepting and kind as Areum. Deep down, he knew it was too good to be true, but he didn't want to believe it. Maybe she'd stay forever if he kept hoping.
For hours she dragged him around the mall, visiting various shops. It didn't matter to her that he couldn't see, her soft hands grabbing his to feel the textures of different silk scarves for her mother's birthday, or guiding his hands slowly along the soft fur of her pet cat.
She was the only one that truly understood him, truly understood the pain of being different, being excluded. Her father had once been the head of Korea's largest mafia gang, having been captured years ago. She'd never seen her father after the day she received news of his capture. He'd killed himself, blaming his whole life's mistakes on Areum.
The Mistake.
Drowning in guilt, she'd built her walls up higher and higher, pushing away all her friends and isolating herself from society. It hadn't been until she'd met Jungkook that she found her antidote, the answer to her pain.
That bond was broken now.

No matter how hard he tried to push thoughts of Areum away, his thoughts always drifted back to her. Often he lay awake on his bed, wondering how she was doing, where she was staying. Before his surgery, she'd stayed with him in his small apartment, appreciating each other's company. He'd come back home to find all her belongings gone and the spare bedroom across the hall clean and spotless, as if she'd never been there in the first place. Desperate, he'd turned the house upside down looking for something to remember her by, a memory of her existence, but there was nothing.
On the bedside table beside him his phone dinged, and he grabbed it, curious as to who would text him at this time. Taehyung?
Hello Jungkook. You're probably wondering why I've decided to text you at 3 in the morning. You see, Jimin and I have been thinking. We want to tell you a little bit about Areum. Meet us at the park near the school at 11 PM tomorrow.
Taehyung
His eyebrows rose in surprise. What made them change their mind? They sure weren't acting all goody-goody the past few days, ignoring Jungkook to the greatest of their extent. He sighed, contemplating whether or not to take up their offer, and fell asleep thinking of Areum and his good times.

At 10:59 of tomorrow, a dark figure stealthily pushed open the creaky park gate, and silently slipped inside. Walking over to a nearby park bench, the curious figure proceeded to take out his phone and tapped a few keys. Moments later, a second hooded figure joined him, and they huddled closer, speaking in low whispers.
At 11:07, a third person entered, and slowly made his way to the previous two.

"Jungkook! You came!"
"Why wouldn't I?"
"We're so glad you came! We waited forev-"
"Just tell me why I'm here," Jungkook interrupted, fed up with Taehyung's nonsensical chattering.
Here, the two glanced at each other, urging the other to begin, while Jungkook watched with an unamused expression. Finally, Jimin spoke.
"Well, we know you miss Areum."
Here Jungkook snorted. "Ha. You think?"
Jimin winced, then continued. "We just wanted to tell you a little bit. Um, so you see, Areum told us not to tell you where she went. She doesn't want to see you."
Well that's obvious.
Taehyung continued. "Areum says that eventually she'll come back, but she hopes you'll move on. She says- "
"Ok, why don't you two stop telling me what she says and tell me what really is going on!" Furious, Jungkook stood to leave, caught sight of Taehyung on the verge of saying something important, and sank back down.
"Areum doesn't want you to know what she looks like." Taehyung finally blurted out.
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "What, why? That doesn't make any sense!"
"Umm, that's all we can tell you, we promised-" they broke off abruptly, and began rushing towards the gate, tripping over each other's feet. In a few moments, Taehyung and Jimin had left, and Jungkook was left staring at the empty space they had just been, heartbroken over his last chance to discover the truth.
Just a question: is it too early in the story to have a favorite character? Because personally, I already really like Taehyung and Jimin's characters, it's just so fun to write! Comment VMin if you laughed reading their parts, because I sure did! VMin!
