Peering grimly at his exhausted reflection in the mirror, and raking his hands roughly through his hair, Jungkook sighed, throwing himself onto his bed, trying in vain to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. It was the third day since he'd been discharged from that nightmare of a hospital. His parents had allowed him to stay home, and he was grateful for the privacy his small, yet comforting bedroom offered. Today, however, the silence in the air engulfed him, nearly choking him. Tomorrow, would be the day of his return to school, his return to the harsh, everyday world called society. Was he ready?
Uncertainty clouded his features, and he sank lower into the mattress. Would the world accept his return? Or would the same events replay themselves?
Flashes of his blind days. Being shoved into lockers, called inappropriate names, being tripped into walls, trash dumped on his head, the list endless and unforgiving. And then he remembered Areum, sticking by him throughout the hard times, never leaving his side. Areum, who'd never given up on him, who'd attended patiently to his bruises and guided him through the busy hallways of high school. Her soft voice rang in his head:
Don't think about the bullies. Focus on the good in your life.
What good? I have nothing left. He'd asked.
Well, for starters, I'm here. She'd replied teasingly.
His heart ached at the thought of his girlfriend. The doubts came back. Was she even his girlfriend anymore?
He dreaded the thought of school tomorrow. He could imagine that the bullies didn't care if he was blind or not. To them he was still Jeon Jungkook, the scrawny, clingy little boy who barely managed without his equally freaky girlfriend. Well, at least they wouldn't have to worry about Areum anymore. She was gone.
The tears started, flowing down his cheeks, and he wiped angrily at them. Don't cry over her, she's not worth it. But his heart told him something else.
Why did Areum even choose me in the first place? Why did she choose to help the freak?
Deep inside, Jungkook knew Areum was perfectly fine without him. It was he who needed her.
He sighed, and closed his eyes, tears still streaming down his rough cheeks, and fell asleep to his own sobs.

It'd been the first morning rays of sunlight that awakened him. As he squinted in the blinding light, it hit him what today was.
Back to school day.
He could almost hear Areum's sing-song voice in his head, as she tried to hype him up for another torturous day of school.
Why did he keep thinking of her?
Why?
+
Surprisingly, the morning had gone OK. Instead of bullying him, the students simply ignored him. Trudging to his next class, Jungkook overheard a snippet of two girls' conversation as they passed him in the crowded hallway, one girl sniffing disdainfully at him, the other rolling her eyes.
"Did you hear about that freak Areum? She got partnered up with Chanyeol-oppa for the history project. Attention seeker."
Areum was here?
Jungkook'd figured she'd left town or something. Now his spirits lifted at the mention of her.
I'm going to find Areum. I have to. He determinedly thought, unaware of the fact that this would be much harder than he thought...
+
The door swung open to reveal a handsome but tired looking young man, whose eyes lit up in surprise upon resting on Jungkook's desperate face.
"Jungkook? What are you doing here? How did you find me?"
His questions were ignored.
"Taehyung, please, tell me where Areum is."
"W-whoa what? A-areum? I don't know where she is!"
Jungkook raised his eyebrows in return. "You don't huh?"
"I really don't! How did you even find me?"
"I, uh, asked a friend."
He'd snuck into the school's front office, stolen the school records, skipped fourth period to read it in the restroom, then tricked the nurse into thinking he was sick in order to return the files. As well as breaking 50 school rules.
"Jungkook, um, see here, I really can't tell you. I'm really sorry."
Jungkook's heart shattered at this. How was he supposed to find Areum now?
Taehyung's face softened upon seeing his heartbroken expression.
"Areum asked me not to tell you."
"Why would she do that?"
His voice was apologetic, almost pitying. "That's all I can tell you. Have a good day, Jungkook." He said, closing the door.
"But, no, wait-" He was left staring at the rusted metal hinges of Taehyung's front door.
He sighed. "Well, I guess I'll have to break into the school again."
+
He received a similar response from Jimin, who'd seemed almost scared of Jungkook.
"Jungkook! Why are you here!"
"Where's Areum?" He'd demanded, catching him by surprise.
"How do you know about her?"
"So you know? Why can't you tell me?"
"Um, I just can't! I'm really sorry Jungkook."
+
Now he collapsed on the bed, his heart broken once more.
If even his closest friends, or so he thought, refused to help him, then he really was alone.
All alone.
