The door shut behind him with a gentle, quiet click. Squinting his eyes, Jungkook peered into the dark living room, barely making out a shape on the ground, seemingly cold and unmoving. Carefully avoiding the small pools of blood and shards of glass on the ground, his heart caught in his throat, and for a moment the world appeared to stop moving.

Why was the world so cruel?

"Mom!" Desperately, he shakes his mom's cold, limp body, praying for her eyes to flutter open and for everything to be alright. "Mom! Please, no, please don't." Tears poured down his face, salty droplets that symbolized his pain. He reached into his pocket and dug around for his cellphone.

"Hello, Seoul National University Hospital. How may I help you?"

And with those words, Jungkook burst into a new wave of tears.

The air felt eerily still. Jungkook sat slouched on the cold hospital bench, nervously awaiting news. Minutes passed, hours. He glanced up at the sound of wheels against the smooth tile floor, expecting the doctor to tell him everything would be alright, that everything will be fine, but it's just a passing nurse, pushing a cart full of medical supplies into a nearby hospital room.

His mother's room.

In a daze, he jolted out of his trance, and dashed into his mother's room.

"Doctor, what's wrong? Is she OK?"

He could've sworn the doctor hesitated before slowly replying. "Well, she's definitely going to live, if that's what you mean." At this, Jungkook let out a small breath of relief before pressing the doctor for more details.

"It appears she was hit in the head with a glass object, as there are minor fractures in her skull. "

Wine bottles, Jungkook recalled, remembering the glass shards strewn about the living room.

His father.

"And she may have also fallen. Her hip bone is severely fractured, and there also appears to be a minor fracture to her right ankle and wrist, but she should be fine. We'll update you with more information sooner."

Numbly, he nodded, eyes straying to his mother lying on the hospital bed, clothed in thin, white hospital garbs.

Wake up, he pleaded with his eyes. Please, I need you mom. I can't survive by myself. Please, mom, wake up for me.

And with those words, tears began to fall again.

The television blared in front of him, a soap opera it appeared. The male lead was saying something, his lips were moving. His expression was pleading, almost begging. The female was replying. No, it seemed she was saying. She pushed him away, and-

Jungkook clicked off the television out of heartache. He thought of the last time his mother had been hurt. It'd been Areum, who'd stayed with him the whole time, who'd notified the police when he was too scared to do anything except worry, who'd taken care of him and cooked for him. Where was she now?

The doorbell rang suddenly.

His mind raced, and he panicked. Who could it be? The police, coming to haul his father away at last. Too good to be true. He opened the door a crack, and came face to face with big chocolate brown eyes.

Ah. Nayeon. He relaxed for a moment, then panicked remembering the unkempt state of their living room.

"U-um. I'll be right there. Just a sec."

Moments later, he was standing outside on the porch with her, his backpack carelessly thrown over one shoulder.

"Let's go."

Thirty minutes later he stood in a small, neat bedroom, admiring the tidiness of the room. Nayeon's room. The bus ride there had been awkward, Nayeon not saying anything as per usual, and Jungkook frantically racking his brains for something to lessen the tension.

Why oh why was he paired with this girl out of all people? The teacher must really hate him...

Now, he sat gingerly on one of the stools she offered him, and turned expectantly to the younger girl.

"What should we do for our project?" Moments of silence passed, and Jungkook internally sighed. Was she ever gonna say anything to him? He'd probably end up doing all the work, or failing, or maybe-

"I prepared a few ideas before, um, do you mind taking a look at them?"

Jungkook's eyes widened in surprise. The girl was actually talking to him! Smiling softly, he turned towards her.

"Sure. I'll bet they're great."

note: i'll go back and edit this sometime, sorry, i haven't really felt like writing these days.
