Prologue
(Hazel)
Life in America is good. I have my family, my best friend, Lacey, and my boyfriend, Colby. Unemployment is at 1%. Crime is at an all-time low. Because one night a year, all crime is legal for 14 hours. I'm not usually worried about The Suppression. I live in a superrich neighborhood and my family practically spends more than half their pay- each year to arm our house. It makes sense not to be nervous, but this year felt different. I had to be prepared for the worst.Prologue 2
(Lacey)
Life in America is good. Only, mine is better than good. I am rich and I believe I have everything I need, except my brother, Leo. He was killed in The Suppression around six years ago, but I try not to think about that. I like to focus on the good things I have, like my parents and my friends, especially my best friend, Hazel. The Suppression always scares me, though. It's the one day that I dread. This year is different, though. This year I'm not even worried, surprisingly. It's ironic, because the one year I'm not scared is really the one year I should be.
